A good friend that I have known since 1991 just bought a new 2016 F150 Platinum crew cab (leftover stock)
He got the V8. Beautiful truck and I'm happy for him but:
After fierce negotiation on the price, he got it to just under 55k before tax title and docs. Vehicle prices have just plain passed me by. I cant mentally get there, just seems like too much for a gasser F150. Capable? yes. Nice? Yes. Worth 55k? I just cant get there mentally.

Mortgage on wheels is right when you consider salesmen sell the monthly payments on an 8 year note instead of the overall purchase price. Unless you can justify paying cash or short-term (2-3 year) loan, new vehicles are the fastest way to poverty and a permanent auto loan. I know people with 70k+ notes on Kias and Toyotas because of the ability to refinance negative equity.

this is why I built a truck.
I was all ready to put 20k down on a new vehicle.
but I wasn't going to get exactly what I needed/wanted.
so I took that money and built mine!

    f150? 55k? nooooo thankyou
I can build 4 6 doors for that, and then sell em off for.... yea still not a profit lol

What an utter waste of money! I read an article(Forbes?) just a month ago or so, that the majority of Americans cannot afford to buy a new vehicle anymore. Not that it stops them from buying. I read another article that the average American carries $6K(?) in credit card debt. That's on top of mortgages, car, and child support payments.

To put it into perspective, I purchased a house in town for $40K, put another $15K into it making it tenable. Over the last 10 years it has been empty for 2 weeks and has paid me back $102K. I have done several like that although that one was the cheapest. It will keep paying out year after year.

That's the reason I drive an old truck. It works just fine and cost me $3800.

That "dream" most people are chasing is actually a $60K parked car. It's gonna to leave a mark!

    I bought 3 new trucks in a row back when I was young and single....... 89 F150 shorty 2wd 6cyl 5spd (13,500 plus taxes), 1991 F250 7.3idi E4OD 2wd regular cab(20,000 plus taxes), and my last one was a 1996 F250 supercab shortbed 4x4 7.3PSD 5spd xlt, full load except power seat.
96 listed at 39,900 Canadian, working at a Ford dealer in the truck shop (while they still had heavys) I got it for real close to 33,000 plus tax and licence. an F150 loaded supercab shortbox was closer to 20,000 at the time.

    some numbers to compare ?

I bought my diesle van for $1500 5.5 yrs ago at 360,000km , spent almost $1500 on parts since then . now at 515,000 still running strong . would take it on a crosscountry road trip tommorrow if i had any time to spare.

better to let someone else take the kick on depreciation??

as much as I would like to own a new truck it doesn't make sense to pay that much money for a truck and it get destroyed in the NE weather.

the funny part is the guy I plow for has 3 2015 f350 trucks and all the other guys have trucks in the 2010 area. here comes me in my 1979 f250 that works just as hard and does all the same work for almost free compered to what they pay each month.

Having sold cars at two different times in my life I can make an argument for either side. My running joke was "You can sleep in a car but you cannot drive a house." I never forced anyone to make a purchase but I did have a very good finance manager at both stores. I would set them up and he would close. In GA I had a referral come in looking for a 10k truck. With 8 foreclosures on his credit report he drove off in a new Silverado EC with factory leather and chrome 20's.

Would I ever buy new? Most likely not. I have bought new twice in my life - 1984 Ford Escort (4900 on the road) and 1994 (1994 S10 10k OTR) (ironic now that I type it) Heck half of my tools are bought used!

Rob, I know we don't get it but a good deal is a state of mind. Nothing more, nothing less. If your buddy is happy.....

I can't afford let alone justify a new vehicle purchase that costs what my mortgage did 16 years ago. Nope!

Well, if he is going to drop that kind of coin, at least its on a Ford. And at least its on something that was at the very least assembled in Dearborn, MI, and or Kansas City, MO.

But again, I'll take my homemade 20 bucks a month to insure, veggy burning, neighbor waking, 25+mpg getting beast over his cream puff any day of the week!

that doesn't make any sense to me. I have a company 2015 F350 CC 4x4 with all the bells and whistles, tax, lic, doc and ext warr cost $63k OTD. I wrote a company check and picked up the truck the following day. an $8k difference boggles my mind.
