Passenger side head not getting oil

I spoke too soon... Oil pressure gets below 10psi when hot at idle, accompanied by a tapping sound. I'm guessing this sound is coming from the rockers not getting enough oil due to the low pressure. What's the fastest way to drop the oil cooler on a 4x4 truck? I need this working by sunrise...

Passenger side head not getting oil

The oil pressure is now sitting pretty at 25-30 psi cold at idle, and the head is now getting oil. I did two things that may have moved the needle. First of all, I installed new lifters all around. Second, I managed to spray seafoam directly into the relief valve through the bottom of the...

ARP lube on stock head bolts

Sounds like I'll be alright, thanks guys

ARP lube on stock head bolts

Pretty much, went to 105 ft-lbs

ARP lube on stock head bolts

I've recently just installed the heads on my truck, and come to find I may have made a critical mistake out of habit. When I've done heads on different engines before, I've always used ARP head studs and ARP fastener lube on the threads and washers. However, this time I used OEM replacement...

Passenger side head not getting oil

It's true. I have a proper gauge that I'll be using when I get it fired up in the coming days. I'll give true numbers then. We definitely know that the passenger side bank isn't getting enough oil pressure to push oil into the head, but that's it. I'll run the engine without covers to see...

Passenger side head not getting oil

I took the lifters apart, and they had no signs of sludge or clogging of any sort. They were clearly worn internally, but not worn enough to have the problem I'm having

Passenger side head not getting oil

I certainly hope you're right. I'm going to take the oil cooler off tonight and check the condition of the relief vale too and report back

Passenger side head not getting oil

There's two valves, the relief valve and the bypass valve. Wouldn't the bypass valve simply bypass the filter and not cut oil pressure?

Passenger side head not getting oil

Good idea. I'll have to find a portable air compressor to check this. Oil cooler has been removed yet. My next plan is to remove it to clean and shim the pressure regulator. I'm just trying to get the critical components that are accessible to me sorted before I start it up next. Could the...

Passenger side head not getting oil

Gotcha, thanks. That's exactly what I thought about the lifters. But if it just so happens that every single lifter on that side is clogged up (extremely unlikely), then I suppose they wouldn't let oil get into the pushrods

Passenger side head not getting oil

Yeah, I inspected the lifters. They were clearly old, and quite scored on the bearing surfaces, but they were straight as were the pushrods. My next attempt may be to clean and shim the oil pressure regulator. I have yet to find a good write up on the process of removing the filter housing...

Passenger side head not getting oil

The heads are still off so I don't know, but the dummy gauge read fine. I'll be putting a real pressure gauge on it once it's running

Passenger side head not getting oil

Could low oil pressure cause that much difference in oil flow between the two heads?

Passenger side head not getting oil

I could also try blasting compressed air into the galleys

Passenger side head not getting oil

There's a tick/knock on that side, sounds to be coming from the top end. It's part of what led me into the lifters to begin with. I'll double check my filter head connections tonight. What am I looking for? I'm guessing there's an O-Ring seal at the filter head, and oil cooler? I'd like to...

Passenger side head not getting oil

Good call. If I could tee into the oil filter housing, technically I could bypass the blockage by running a hose from the oil filter housing to the pressure sender port. I'd tee the pressure sender into that line. Of course I'd run AN fittings with PTFE lines

Passenger side head not getting oil

Thanks for sharing that. It's may be obvious that I was getting all of my misfire issues at the front passenger exhaust lifter, ie the first one to receive oil. Maybe it was clogged up, and caused the rest of the lifters to not get oil The dummy oil pressure gauge was reading fine, so this...

Passenger side head not getting oil

I was thinking that last night. I'll start with the passenger/rear lifter, work forward. I have a full new set on deck regardless, since I thought this might be been a lifter issue earlier on. Judging by the way the lifters are designed, with the step down in the diameter where it rides in the...

Passenger side head not getting oil

Wow, thanks for that write up. Lots of good info in there. I've been planning to run a quart of diesel in the oil when I next fire up, but you've got me wondering about cleaning the galleys. I haven't had a chance to look at the engine since starting the thread, but I wonder if I could coil up...

Passenger side head not getting oil

I've got a bit of head scratcher here. For background, my front passenger side cylinder hasn't been firing when cold. Symptoms were popping in the exhaust, a top end/passenger side knock, and ridiculous amounts of raw diesel out the tailpipe, all while cold. Cylinder #1 was clearly the culprit...

    Head Gasket Debris in Cylinder

IP gear and housing were not removed, I did my research. Thanks for the tip xolatem, I'll give that a try. Thanks guys, this is my first time pulling heads without doing a full engine rebuild.

    Head Gasket Debris in Cylinder

I've removed the heads to have them machined, and have cleaned off the deck on the block nicely. The only problem is that small bits of head gasket debris are stuck between the piston and cylinder wall. I'm guessing they're going to get chucked out the exhaust port, but I'm not sure. Regardless...

Cylinders 1 & 2 not firing when cold

Ah, looks like I had the numbering wrong. It's the front passenger side cylinder and the one just behind it. So, cyl 1 and 3?

Cylinders 1 & 2 not firing when cold

Shoot, that's a bummer of a job I'm thinking since my head gaskets were just done by the previous, and the problem persisted before and after the job (assuming he didn't mess that up somehow), and I have a popping sound, I'm looking at a stuck lifter being the culprit. Changing those out...
