    Am I missing my magnet?

    - should be after, if it was 16 before i doubt it would start. take a look at the timing notes on my web page http://webpages.charter.net/idi_diesel my 93 7.3 was 18 after, now 2 degrees after. if you can get it to -2 / -3 it should be good. i assume you have the lumi probe pick up? also make...

    U joint size

measure all the u-joint bearing caps, some have 2 different sizes on one joint. then go to autozone or where ever. the u-joint will also be listed by cap size. 93

    I've got some problems guys

Check the oil sending unit and the pedestal it mounts to on the back of the engine. Remove both and rap with Teflon (plumbing) tape and re-install. Keep in mind that the oil pressure gauge may not work or work erratically due to the poor ground caused by the tape.

    tensioner

That’s the old style tensioner, had this on my 93 (92.5 motor). In my opinion the shock slows the response of the tensioner and causes more issues once the tensioner weakens.

Getting this annoying engine shudder at highway speeds.

I put three documents on my web site under "diesel information" they are listed as 1993 Aerostar, Ranger, Explorer 001 (002 and 003). They may not be exactly what you have but they should give you an idea on "how to". I used a vice and sockets like suv7734 suggested for a press, the documents...

Getting this annoying engine shudder at highway speeds.

You need to remove the drive shaft and pop the caps and inspect them. The u-joints are less than $18.00 each. Also make sure the balance weight didn't come off - look for a clean spot...

Getting this annoying engine shudder at highway speeds.

If you have a tach put the truck in park and try running the rpm up to the same range as when you are driving at 55/65. If the shudder persists more than likely its engine related or perhaps torque converter. If there is no shudder I would get a set of u-joints for your drive shaft. My truck did...

    Sticking lifters?

You should really wait for the engine to warm up before driving it. I wait until the temp needle is just above the hash mark to the left of Normal. At least on the E40D trans it must be up to a certain temperature before it will shift into OD, I have found that on my truck the trans will go into...

Pinhole in oil pan...would JBWeld work?

My van sat on grass for awhile before I bought it and I had the same issue with mine about 3.5 years ago only I had quite a few pin holes. While doing an oil change I wire wheeled wire brushed the pan, cleaned it with lacquer thinner and then went after it with wire again. After cleaning it once...

    Tensioner Lasts Only 6 Months

On my 93 van (no AC) I replaced my tensioner with the latest model from Ford – no shock. I also replaced all pulley covers and bearings including the one that replaces the AC unit – some are only available from Ford, also parts guy at AutoZone told me the after market pulleys were of...

Part # for MT480 Lumi Probe Adapter needed

The MT160 is a luminosity probe. You would remove one of the glow plugs (either cylinder 1 or 4) and screw the luminosity probe into the glow plug hole. This is a picture of one that fits another brand of meter (the end that the photo connector attaches to is larger than that for the MT480) but...

Part # for MT480 Lumi Probe Adapter needed

Here ya go... MT-162 = All VW MT-160 = GM 4.3L V-8, 5.7 V-8, 4.3L V-6 FORD 6.9L V-8, and 7.3L V-8 MT-161 = GM 6.2L V-8 Also if you need a manual I've got them on my web site for both the MT480 and the MT1480a - they are free. You might want to look at both, the MT1480a manual...

Timing Light, Pulse adapter, MT480, MT1480a

I measured the damper pulley and it comes out to about 22.352” divided that by 360 = 0.0621 so 1 degree is just short of 1/16th of an inch. The timing plate is about 2 and 1/16th inches from the magnetic probe hole to the bottom of the plate. 20 degrees is about 1 and 1/4" so somewhere about an...

Timing Light, Pulse adapter, MT480, MT1480a

Can you check out this picture and tell me if it looks like yours? I cleaned mine off but found no marks? http://webpages.charter.net/idi_diesel/Images/Timing%20marks.JPG If there were marks I'm thinking they should be about a 1/2" from the bottom to be at 8 btdc? Thanks, 93

Timing Light, Pulse adapter, MT480, MT1480a

Dennis, I haven’t used a timing light on one of these before so it could be I did that part wrong so help me out here. When you say you "bring the marks in line on the timing plate and damper" do you mean to the bottom of the timing plate? When I switched from the MT1480a to the timing light...

Timing Light, Pulse adapter, MT480, MT1480a

First off what do you use for a timing mark for the timing light? Do you dial in an offset on the timing light? Also if i understand you, you must have a lumy probe and a ground clamp that you clamped to the injector line? The upper of the of the two ports is used for the magnetic...

Timing Light, Pulse adapter, MT480, MT1480a

I wonder if the meter it self is set for a 20˚ offset – that’s supposed to be the ISO standard? On the OTC timing light (used with pulse adapter) I barrowed from my brother I added 20˚ to the setting I wanted (9.5˚ BTDC 2000 rpm) and came up with a total of 29.5˚, that matched up with the 9.5˚...

Timing Light, Pulse adapter, MT480, MT1480a

Wow, I didn't know about that one, can you PM me the documentation? If it’s large please go to my web site and drop me e-mail. What I’ve done here is barrowed a few pieces of equipment so I could compare them one on one so we could get some cross reference number to work with and optimize the...

Timing Light, Pulse adapter, MT480, MT1480a

You are talking about at least a couple of different devices. Next if any adjustments are needed turn the engine off and follow all safety procedures out line in your owner’s manual. With the strobe / timing light all you need is a pulse adapter and some type of tachometer. Attach the adapter...

    Timing Do-Dad / Thingamajig

I might have a straight timing light, I don’t have one with a degree offset for sure. I’ll see if I can get those also. I doubt if I’ll have time to change mine (if it needs it?) but I’ll at least try to get correlating numbers. I haven’t looked at the area (other than to clean out the hole)...

    Timing Do-Dad / Thingamajig

Hey Mel, I'm going to barrow a MAC pulse adapter from a friend of mine when I get back home (hopefully this weekend). I'll hook up the MT 1480 using the luminosity probe, and then switch over to using the spark plug pickup and pulse adapter. I’m also going to check the MT 1480 against the...

    I timed my truck

Mel, The rpm range of 2k and 1 to 2 degrees ATDC was suggested to me by people on sites like this one so I tried it. The information listed on my site concerning the setting of 2* ATDC at 2000 rpm is what I found worked best for me and accurate. When the engine is cold, and the cold advance...
