I came across a 7.3 IDI boat engine locally for $250. The guy is selling it because the water-cooled exhaust manifold cracked and apparently they are impossible to find.
I’m interested in building an engine to drop in my truck, but I want to ask the group whether it would be a mistake to pick a...
The only way I got the probe to work was to jam it all the way in until it touched the balancer. When I let go it sprung back a tiny bit so it wasn’t actually touching, but ended up as close as possible.
I forgot to add that there are other olive seals in the fuel system, so you might as well replace them all. Russ (Russrepair.com) includes them in his return line kit, but I can’t remember if he sells them separately as well. I bought viton ones when I did it instead of standard rubber. Look up...
That fitting is different depending on the year of your truck. If it has a steel hard line leading from the IP return to that fitting, you will have a rubber “olive” seal that is supposed to seal the connection. There’s a good chance that olive seal is cracked and old (mine was hard as a rock...
Gandalf, have you checked to make sure that your rear brake shoes are working correctly? There was a thread a while back about how many of them were cast incorrectly, causing them to only slightly expand and not grab the drum with enough force to provide stopping power. I ask because I swapped...
I dug up Redline’s technical information sheet, which has some good info for those curious. Here’s the link:

Here’s a quote about MTL’s similarity/differences to Dexron 4:
“In transmissions which recommend...
I used to advocate sticking with ATF since that’s what Ford recommends, until I found out that ZF-5 transmissions are actually used in many other vehicles all over the world. They’re even in Chevy trucks down in south america. ZF recommends their own fluid called “ZF Ecofluid M” which is a...
The duck bill is at the bottom of the hole behind that plate, if you stick a camera in there and look down you’ll see it 5-6 inches straight down. If you point the camera upwards in that hole you’ll see the cowl opening. The cowl area slopes downwards so water can drain, and it flows right over...
Well I took a closer look at this today. I pulled that cover and looked around with an inspection camera, and there was some stuff at the bottom but not too much. I didn’t think it was enough to keep water from draining and make that hole fill up. I sucked it all out with a small shop vac, but...
Have you guys heard of Edison motors? I saw some videos of them converting old peterbilts to a diesel electric power plant, and lately I saw them promoting what looked like a brand new rig. The guy seemed really knowledgeable and focused on trucks that can do real work.
Same as IDIBRONCO, I only hear the rollover noise when I’m in gear and moving slowly, below 1200 RPM or so. Pretty much just parking lots and stop-and-go traffic. It is annoying though.
Since I patched my floorboards and replaced the carpet, I’ve been chasing and sealing water leaks into the cab. I re-sealed my drip rails that were leaking down the pillars, and I re-sealed the cowl that was leaking next to the trans tunnel. I thought I had everything sealed, but last time it...
I thought all the SMFs used interchangeable pilot bearings (as long as the flywheels are for the same year/trans, etc.) but hopefully someone else can confirm.
I used the bearings that came with my Luk kit, but since then I’ve seen several people say that the pilot bearing in the kit isn’t...
I installed the Luk 07225 kit in my truck 2 years ago. The clutch that I replaced said perfection on it, so I assume it’s the same one you’re seeing on Rockauto. I did notice an increase in rollover noise with the luk clutch, but maybe the springs in the old clutch were more worn out/softer and...
It seems like the pinion seals usually leak because the pinion bearing is loose and allowing the pinion to move around. If that bearing is bad, I would just find a good used axle to swap in. That’s what I did.
Do you guys remember when Edmund’s did some testing a couple years ago and found that you emit more emissions running a leaf blower for 1/2 hour than you would driving a ford raptor all the way from Texas to Alaska? That’s when it really hit me how clean cars are nowadays. I don’t think there is...
