For Sale, 56 Kw Military Genset on trailer, Detroit Diesel 4-53 (Video)

Video Link This is an excellently running 4-53 Detroit Diesel generator. I'm unsure of the exact military model number and vintage, but I believe it to be from the late 50's. That's based on when the 53 series was introduced, and when the branding switched from GM Diesel to Detroit Diesel...

No. Turbo and NA balancers are weighted differently.

Detroit 6V53 marine motor transmission swap

The biggest difference in HP ratings is going to be from injectors. The truck 6V53T usually had 5A50 injectors and were usually 225hp. The 400HP marine was probably built with 5N65 or N70 injectors. They would have different specs for injector height as well, which is how timing is set. I...

    Need a IP Adjustment Tool

No welder needed for this one. You can easily modify a 9/16” wrench with a propane plumbers torch, and a 4-1/2” angle grinder from harbor freight. You’ll spend less than you would on the “proper” tool, and you’re increasing your arsenal for other projects.

    Filter head chip

There are fewer filter options with the 6.9 filter head. No water separator drain. If it’s not leaking now, it looks like you will probably be fine as is. I have an unmolested 7.3 filter head I can sell you if you want. Just shoot me a PM.

The flywheel for a manual trans, as well as the harmonic balancer are also different for the factory turbo motors. You can bolt the v-belt crank pulley onto a turbo balancer though.

Air intrusion on 1990 7.3L f350 with banks turbo

I’d try a new return cap on the one that’s still leaking. That’s the most obvious place to focus your efforts at this point.

Air intrusion on 1990 7.3L f350 with banks turbo

It sounds like the glow plug controller is working about like it should be. It’s probably worth it to check the rest of the glow plugs for continuity. Also the lower voltage readings at the dash vs at the battery could simply be from poor connections on that circuit, but poor connections on the...

Air intrusion on 1990 7.3L f350 with banks turbo

I was asking about white smoke while cranking because that would indicate fuel being sprayed, but not igniting. That would be the case if your glow plugs were not working properly, and there wasn't enough heat in the cylinders to fire. The reason I ask is because it doesn't sound like fuel...

Air intrusion on 1990 7.3L f350 with banks turbo

Have you verified that your glow plugs are working? Are you seeing any white smoke while cranking?

So what did you do with your truck today?

Lets say about 3000 gallons of diesel fuel at todays prices.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Yeah, it’s a mixed bag sort of deal. I really was pretty happy with the way the truck turned out, but it wasn’t the ideal configuration for me. I would have rather had a SRW and 4x4. Also the truck was really pretty comfortable for what it was, but it’s not really a pleasure to drive for a 100+...

    New injectors arrived. Advice?

I don’t feel like it’s that much work to just remove the injector lines. Remove the vibration clamps, and then remove the lines starting from the top down where they’re connected to the IP. Obviously you should label them so you know where they go back. Also don’t forget to hold the timing...

So what did you do with your truck today?

So today I sold my truck. I had a guy I know ask me if I wanted to sell it a couple of weeks ago. I said no. He said give me a number. I gave him a number that would make me happy, and today I traded the title for a check.

    What is the fix?

Yeah modern pickups are crazy now. The duramax is 445hp, 910 lb ft, and paired to a 10 speed. I think the 6.7 Powerstroke is maybe a little higher in ratings. All of the big three have available tow ratings around 35k or so. That’s just trailer weight, combined weights will be about 50k lbs. The...

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

One thing I didn’t see you mention was an intercooler. That’s pretty much mandatory with any larger than stock IP. Also when I was doing my IDIT build a few months ago, standard and .030” over were the only pistons available, and I only saw Mahle.

    What is the fix?

I’ve driven plenty of 7.3 PSD’s. What you describe would need to be one that was seriously built. The 7.3 PSD was a good motor, but is still a dog compared to today’s diesel trucks.

A pneumatic or battery powered grease gun works well for that type of bearing packer. It really speeds things up.

    No power steering

The gap is normal. There are seals inside the steering box that have failed. The steering box has to come out and get disassembled in order to replace them. Most people just swap out for a rebuilt one. You will need a pitman arm puller to remove it. There are only two brands that are usually...

    7.3 idi engine 1989

Copy that. Back to your original question, you probably will need to piece together parts from different places. This is especially true if you want to minimize the costs. When I did mine a few months ago, I ended up with parts from Classic Diesel Designs, RockAuto, TH motor sports, Amazon...

    7.3 idi engine 1989

Bent rods I suppose would be one concern with copious amounts of ether. You really just need to get it torn down and get it to a machine shop, before ordering parts. That is unless you’re just planning on running a ball hone in it and putting standard rings back in it. If it gets bored over...
