#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

The engine is back in the truck - everything is hooked up - no leaks. Cranks and cranks and cranks... no combustion, no smoke from the tail pipe. HPOP resevoir has oil in it (we added ~2 quarts before cranking) We added oil to the head galleys through the plug holes. about 18 quarts total in...

#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

Well - I took the block, heads and crank to Superior diesel in Detroit - family owned since '78. They looked everything over and determined .030" over was the way to go- so that's how I went. Heads cleaned up nicely as did the block and crank - no cracks, everything passed pressure checks...

#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

Thanks for the tip - for sure it has to come out - and I will either get a reman'd long block - or rebuild mine. I'm leaning more toward having superior diesel here in detroit rebuild it - they are a family business started in '78 with a good reputation and what sounds like a high quality...

#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

Well the news isn't good. Sorry I don't have any pictures yet. Something (I'm guessing pieces of the compressor wheel thanks to a faulty airbox lid) got into the cylinder - there are half dozen marks in the top of the piston, and some on the combustion chamber of the head - but that's not...

#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

That's a good point about the pushrod - come to think of it - a pushrod on #8 did seem closer to the oil spout on the injector than the others. The truck is at my friends shop now, I've purchased the gaskets, bolts, and an intake and exhaust valve. He will be tearing into it this afternoon...

    obs 40/20/40 seat

I've put car seats in a truck, and newer truck seats in an older truck, neither worked very well - car seats just don't have the height for proper position in a truck. The newer truck seats have really thick back rests which make them real tough to deal with in an older truck - no way in a reg...

    not gonna make 300k

man - I'm staring down the barrels of possibly having to swap engines in my '01 - if I pull the head and find piston problems instead of valve problems like I'm hoping. I have the garage and most of the tools - just short on time, maybe I should pay you to do the swap!:D

    Help needed, diesel down

is your exhaust back pressure valve still intact? Remove the actuator arm from the valve and wire it open and see if that fixes it - it sounds to me like it's getting closed or partially closed - that would feel just like you have a governor / engine brake. Are you able to check for any codes?

    Turbo question

I recently rebuilt mine with help from the guy in Utah off ebay. He sends you the kit, you send him your rotating assembly and he sends it back balanced. These turbo's are very easy to rebuild, no special tools required, just the right parts. For $120 or so for everything - it was a...

#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

compression is low - it's not an injector or electrical issue :puke:Compression test shows 140 on #8, 340 on 2,4,6. Wet compression test shows the same 140. Compressed air down the glow plug hole didn't help me find where the leak is - I couldn't tell if air was going out intake, exhaust...

#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

I ran the cylinder contribution test a few times before tearing into it - I got errors on 1,3,8 pretty consistantly - #8 every time. Now running contribution test I only get #8. There's a pretty good flow out of the CCV on the driver's valve cover - so that has me a bit worried that I...

    200k

I did the sway bar end links - fixed that clunk - I could move the bar up and down an inch by hand. Shop around for those end links - I got prices from $31 all the way up over $70 each. I got my for $31 - Dorman parts from napa with my discount. I had to cut down the bolt for the upper mount...

#8 misfire still present after rebuilding injectors

:dunno I purchased my "new" truck - a few months ago in Lakeland Florida, drove it home to detroit area knowing I was most likely going to be doing an injector rebuild by the way it ran.... rough and smokey. 2001 cc lwb srw 191k, lariat, auto 4x4, all stock for now After I got into the...

    Break and Pedal Assembly Loosness

Maybe - but pull the pedal box out and replace all the bushings in there - according to the directions from the "old" site - I miss that place - I digress. I did that with mine (I think I still have the original clutch at 147k) and it made a world of difference even though there didn't FEEL...

    Rear Gear Ratio

there should be a stamped tag on one of the rear axle differential cover bolts. There will be numbers and letters stamped on it. 3L73 is limited slip 3.73 4L10 is limited slip 4.10 If there is just a space between the numbers - no L - it's an open diff.

replaced fuel pump while turbo was out - now it's leaking!

Just an update - I had to order the proper banjo bolt washers from the dealer - less than $4. Thankfully my 12pt 1 1/4" craftsman combo wrench was all I needed, and a little patience to swap out the washers.... it was a pretty easy job. So - Lesson learned - DONT USE COPPER WASHERS on the...

replaced fuel pump while turbo was out - now it's leaking!

I've cleaned the area a few times and tried to find the source of the leak. It's not coming from the EBPV control rod - I removed that long ago and plugged the hole with a pipe plug - no traces of oil around that. The turbo pedestal O-rings I just replaced are doing thier job - no traces...

replaced fuel pump while turbo was out - now it's leaking!

I'll check it again when I have the chance - I'm hoping the tightening I did will fix the leak. Really hard to tell down in that valley WHERE it's coming from. but it's oil, not fuel, that much I can say for sure. I used copper sealing washers that were a bit thicker than the sealing...

    DMF play

BigRed describes the sound well. My injectors are fairly new from Bean, and all my wiring is fine - she runs like a scalded ape, the only issue is some noise at idle and shut off....

replaced fuel pump while turbo was out - now it's leaking!

I've taken a few more looks at it. I was able to get about an 1/8 of a turn on the banjo nut to compress the copper washers more. I also tightened the two 10mm mounting bolts a bit more. It's pretty tough to see where the oil is coming from. I hosed the area with brake clean the other...

Been Playing with Aircraft Stripper & a Polisher Again.

if you don't have this kind of time, and you don't have your wheels dismounted from your tires.... I've found that a variable speed buffing wheel with 3m rubbing compound works really well to get a nice shine out of a neglected wheel (after the clear coat is already removed - my wheels are raw...

replaced fuel pump while turbo was out - now it's leaking!

yup - I made sure to get two new washers for the bit banjo bolt, and it takes such a big wrench to tighten it - I'm certain I got it TIGHT. what I'm leaking is engine oil for sure - not fuel. I also replaced the hoses to the pump while I was there, with fuel injection rated hose. The...

replaced fuel pump while turbo was out - now it's leaking!

 So - the turbo o rings were leaking - go to the international dealer, get the two orings and the gasket for the exhaust inlet to the turbo. Pray for patience, and begin the removal - if I ever meet the dude that did the packaging on this thing I'm going to beat him with in inches of...
