    blow off valve

My thinking was along the lines of george's...I could see some benefits to it in a high boost diesel app where overboost/turbo stall could be a concern, but not for what 99.9% of what we do in the IDI world

    blow off valve

Not unless you were running some sort of really exotic custom built turbo setup.... and even then, on a diesel I dont think its necessary as there is no throtle plate to load up.

    Exhaust brake on an F-Superduty.

Exhaust brakes do make a big difference if you are gonna spend alot of time running downnhill heavy...that being said, read the other thread on exhaust brakes and the idi's...you will want to swap the valve springs to prevent float...I will admit grossing 16k is some decent weight, are you sure...

anyone ever use one of these?

short answer, not that I recall...If memory serves we would basically just take it to the track, enter caliberation mode set the weights etc. and do a run...then plug in the number on the time slips....again, its been about 5 years since I have touched one, and basically we would create a...

anyone ever use one of these?

the first generation (single sensor) units prettymuch sucked unless you did alot of caliberation, and then they would only be accurate to the vehicle they were caliberated to. From experience I dont see why it would not work in an idi (except maybe tach). Got rid of mine about 5 years ago when...

Looking for anyone in phx to lend a hand

agree totally....I was a little peeved when I found out the shop I paid did it all by ear...learned from all you guys how to get that far. I am 99% sure my frusturation with this one is in the internal advance....even fully cocked to the drivers side it is too advanced. Just for grins I...

Looking for anyone in phx to lend a hand

Okay, everytime I get to this point I end up ripping my hair out...the last time I sent the truck to a shop that timed it by ear for $120...I gotta learn this. Is there any OB'ers in the phoenix area who can teach me how to time one of these motors....I dont have a meter (but will gladly buy...

Behold, I am now a Dually.

i was thinking a matching red powdercoat....most of the times the white wheels just look unfinished to me...on that rig they just fit

    IDI timing advance arm

pump came from MWFI...dad gave me a gift certificate, and I dont have a ton of faith in them....to install I pulled the 3 bolts for timing, and the ones inside the oil fill neck...didnt pull the cover off.

    IDI timing advance arm

could I be a full tooth off, and if so how do I fix it? with the arm sitting in its normal position it without a doubt is acting too advanced regardless of how far a retard it (towards the drivers side)

    IDI timing advance arm

what got me looking at the arm was that I couldnt retard it any further and the rattle and smoke would put a cummins to shame...at first I was thinking I was a full tooth off, but then for shits and giggles I stuffed a piece of vacuum line behind the arm (where the throtle piece would hit it)...

Behold, I am now a Dually.

the dually makes a huge difference when pulling that kind of weight....and when you can go with a 5'er or goose and load up the rear axle it makes stopping much more controlled. as much as I am not a flatbed guy, it does look sharp, and the white wheels look really good

    IDI timing advance arm

just installed a new ip in one of the trucks.....set it to the marks and it is acting way to advanced...actuate the arm and it starts sounding normal. I am totally brain dead right now (and have spent the last month working on complex japanere FWD fuel injected crap)...what am i missing?

Essential IDI spares for remote areas and extended journeys?

I was gonna say....anytime I am doing a long distance run I always grab my laptop and the cable to use my cell phone as a modem....more than once I have done side of the road repairs with just tools, wire, duct tape, and access to OB. and for the list..spare u-joints (but again, wired up...

How fast can an IDI Owner run the 100 Yard Dash,......?

Sorry to hear about the damage, and glad the kids werent in it. I will say it does give me some confidence in my paranoia...our driveway is on a slight angle, and it drives my wife nuts, but I keep a tire small block sitting near the truck. Anytime its sitting there and not in gear its...

    Dash Illumination

if it were the rheostat you wouldnt have the lamps around the wiper/headlight/fuel selector. More than once I have plugged the gauge pods back in and gotten a connection good enough for some things to work, and not enough for full functionality. my take, pull the cluster out, throw some...

    9 or 10 speed Trans?

Personally I am getting ready to drop in a spicer eso66-7B (7 speed) along with an AA splitter. To have everything work the way I would like it is going to require about 2.5" of body lift and going to a 3.73 rear end. When all is said and done the truck will be 3" higher, 550 lbs heavier, get...

    9 or 10 speed Trans?

I think the way Robert put it is simple and accurate...on most diesels (and ours is no exception) there is about a 500 RPM window where you will get both the best milage and the most power....even with a 6-speed you can only find that point 6 times, the more gears, the more oppertunities you...

    9 or 10 speed Trans?

Brad, it was my remark about running empty and only using 3~4 gears, and I agree with you to a point, but there is another side...I will openly admit that my t-19 does get the job done, it also labors the engine in the process. On just about any decent grade if I have anything close to 10k...

    9 or 10 speed Trans?

most people miss the point of multi-speed transmissions that are used in med/heavy duty trucks....its a pretty rare occasion that will you go through all the gears in sequence. Its all about being able to match your road speed to a desired engine speed. As an example in one of the old 10...

    Oil Burners turbo kit

From a private conversation with Dave he did remark that his truck sees 20+ psi daily...He's a very cool guy and if you PM him is pretty open about what all he has done. It was his truck that inspired me to purchase my first IDI

    new speaker wires to doors?

I agree with Arch...pretty straightforward and easy. Personally I always add a disconnect plug inside the kick panel...keeps you from having to cut stuff up if you need to replace a door

Since we are on the subject of electric fans...

Mel - you are exactly correct, there are many factors that contribute to total flow (and it backing-upinside the engine compartment), I was just trying to point out that although 14000cfm sounds like this huge amount, it is actually attainable at a normal road speed....Just as -Jon...In my...

    Brakes

if the pads have not been bedded in you can get a burnt smell, if they have a fe miles on them it could be that the compound is too soft and they are overheating....in short, no its not normal...I can stand on my brakes at 60 mph 2 or 3 times in succession and not get a burning smell
