    diesel fish/ski

6.5's are boat anchors, not boat engines. The funnest part of owning a 6.5 is busting out the BIG torch tip and cranking up the bottles to blow through the oil pan and rear conrod/crank throw to facilitate turning the friggin thing over so you can get the flexplate bolts out. Oh yeah, forgot to...

    2003 F-250 12v Conversion Project Thread

I think I would just go buy a whole great running 12 valve for <$1500. Something most people new to this stuff overlook is the longblock itself is a very small expense. The fuel system, turbo and transmission is where all your money goes. If you blow it up throw it away and get another one.

My recommendation- Power hone just enough to break glaze. If there's a ridge toss it and buy another block. It will be cheaper. If you feel the urge to buy pistons 7163's or 7140's are open chamber and the same compression. You can run marine injectors without a ton of smoke and the open...

    Perkins in a Ford swap?

They are likely quite old. Figure out what they are first. Cummins has made thousands of different engines, so has Perkins (Now Cat). They might be useful, they are likely boat anchors.

    PSD 7.3 or 1st gen. Cummin's swap?

Funny as it may sound I think it's easier to install a 12v into a manual tranny ford than switch out an IDI. I would sell the truck and buy a PSD truck if you wanted one, no reason in the world to go through all that effort.

    Cummins in 1/2 ton?

These type of swaps are commonplace, there are a good number of 5.9CTD powered ramchargers out there. That said, the dodge bodies are something aweful as in how they're actually constructed and hold up and the frames leave much to be desired. You will have a difficult time if you just have a...

What year was the D60 front reintroduced to the F350? ZF5?

I've had similiar poor experiences with the very early ZF's. The 87 "expirimental" models and 88 models seamed to fail early. I think they had the bugs worked out by 89. My 89 EX-IDI F350 had over 900,000 on it before the original ZF gave out. In the end it was run out of oil and ate it's...

    Towing capabilities

Your own common sense and driving skill are the biggest factors. Having seen the frames under 94+ dodges and knowing how terrible the brakes are I would limit towing to 20K GCVW at an absolute max, but I know there are many that best 30K with 2wd duallies.

Ford with a John Deere Diesel

I believe I attempted to educate the uninformed of how a B series Cummins is not a "dodge" engine, not sure that constitutes name calling. Don't take offense to this, but your writings in this JD thread come off more thought out and more mature than the writings you had when you first found this...

Ford with a John Deere Diesel

Rusty, Building the adapter isn't all that complicated. A machinist worth a salt could make any engine adapter you could need. I would not consider myself a machinist as I don't put myself anywhere near the class of the men I consider good friends that are real machinists, but I could make any...

    89 to 93 cummins into a 88f250 4x4

Many points covered are good suggestions however I strongly disagree over some transmission opinions in this thread. IMHO (owning and operating a diesel tranny shop) the NV4500 is a last resort option for a swap, has terrible ratios and very poor quality parts support for the normal person's...

    Cummins swap check list.

I have parted and overhauled quite a few 5.9's from Ford chassis and there are lots of differences from the dodge motors. Most of the ford chassis engines are shot by 150K. They get the piss run out of them at 26K in most applications. You will need a dodge oil pan and pickup tube. The Ford pan...

    2003 F-250 12v Conversion Project Thread

I'd have to look at a 241 to refresh my memory, I don't recall if they actually have the vacuum switch and a sensor or if it's just the vacuum switch and the 4x4 sensor is on the front axle CAD. I use Torque King shafts and gears from Quad4x4. They seam to hold up very well. Anything else...

    conversion radiator

That intercooler will fit poorly, so will the radiator. Fords are tall and skinny in the front. Good radiator choices are the supercool with 4 cores for a hot 5.9 or a 98+ powerstroke radiator. The powerstroke and F700/F800 radiators work well.

    2003 F-250 12v Conversion Project Thread

RTV under the yoke nut does a better job than the spline seal. Any parts store or wrecking yard should be able to get you the position sensor. You obviously don't need the dodge t-case vacuum crap so make sure the parts person you deal with knows what you're talking about. All the little crap...

    2003 F-250 12v Conversion Project Thread

These engines do not have sleeves. You will not have a "new" engine unless you spend considerably more than a grand. I know where to buy parts and can do most machinework in house. If you must have "new" expect to have $5000+ tied up into it. These engines are rated per cummins to last an...

    2003 F-250 12v Conversion Project Thread

Looking good. You can remove every dodge sensor off the engine and get it ready to go in by putting the Ford water temp and oil pressure senders in. If you don't know the thorough history of the engine replace the headgasket now. I've done many C conversions. 80% of the used engines I've...

    I want a recipe.....

I think argve's recommendations are pretty sound. I guess what it really boils down to is how much of a little kid are you inside? If you actually intend on keeping the rig awhile going balls out with the engine will just make you hate driving it after say 50K miles at the most. Plus I don't...

    4x4 zf5 availibility!

$100-$300 is the going rate for an S5-42 and $300-$500 for a 47 around here. There are tons of ZF's out there. Ford made quite a few 80's and 90's diesel trucks.

    7.3 IDI in a '73-'79

You can always cut and weld, but if you are dealing with a 4x4 the biggest difference in drivetrain layout between the 1959 through 79 4x4's and the 1980 through 2009 4x4's is the front axle pinion offset is quite a bit different. If you put the 1980-up engine crossmember (yes, 1980+ 2wd and...

    Tire size vs. fuel mileage

When I wrote that I had a 71 F250 with a 3.9 4BT. The mileage figures were from that truck. I put the 71 together to see how I liked the 4BT in a fullsize pickup. I've had this 70 F250 for quite awhile, I'm attached to it and not willing to cut corners to make it as I feel it should be. I liked...

    IDI's in Medium Duty Apps

I'd have to agree with the IDI being vehicular suicide in anything heavy. I think it's far less than poor at 15K with a 1 ton truck. I don't know what IDI things you want to test, but it seams to me an IDI is flat maxxed out around 15K. If you wanted to push it's limits for testing I think a...

Blew up my truck.... Time for a Cummins I think

I don't follow this one bit. Diesel runaway is something you have to either accept or add an intake cutoff to prevent it. If you don't have anything to stop the engine if it does runaway how in the hell does it cause you to crash? Yes, the bottom of the engine will come apart, but that's...

Blew up my truck.... Time for a Cummins I think

The expiration (as my girlfriend calls it) is in progress. There isn't a build thread and there may not be one. To be frank the expedition is a vehicle that I would never own, but circumstances dictate it and it does fine. It will never be a vehicle I'm proud of and will be a product of...
