zd9 equivalent is NOT Beru ZD9. You may have gotten junk glow plugs. They will work for a while but may swell, making them impossible to remove without removing the head. There are several short cuts you should NOT make and glow plugs is one of them. :)

Yes there isn't really a zd9 equivalent.. it also sounds like a air intrusionis a possibility maybe timing as well with the smoky idle, The knock maybe a bad injector

motorcraft, beru or i even consider dieselrx glowplugs are all good and should be the only plugs used. all the others will swell or crap out quick. so your plugs might actually be shot and you dont know it. i have seen autolite plugs last one week in a buddies truck so you just never know.

air intrusion would be my guess as well. you mentioned you had electric pump so im guessing its triggered by the FSS on the pump so that shouldn't be an issue. you have fuel at the injection pump itself i believe you mentioned. so next test could be clear tubing replacing one of the return lines or some other way to see if your getting a lot of bubbles in the lines themselves. this will cause a no start if bad enough because the injectors cant build enough pressure to pop consistently

another way to test for air is to crack an injector line while someone turns the key to crank the engine. you will see air bubbles around the nut/injector

It will turn over but it will not fire up, the glow plugs are brand new ebay glow plugs zd9 equivalent

Test the plugs.I bet they (some anyway) already burnt out. There's a reason we always say if it isn't a Beru,it just wont due.:D

Only use Beru unless you want to deal with broken glowplugs stuck in your engine's head.

The pump is a facet fuel pump and its on a relay triggered by a switch in the cab and it is pumping, i just ordered a complete set of beru glowplugs, those other ones have only been in the truck less than a month so hopefully no problems removing. The truck is an 89 7.3, work truck incase yall are wondering. And i would think at any air intrusion would be compensated by the electric pump or am i wrong on that? I can tell you that there is no obvious leak between the fuel pump and injection pump and there isnt one on the high pressure side to the injectors that i can tell.

With my epump I still will have to work air out of the system when I open the system up for example, its much easier than with the mechanical pump but air plays a factor regardless. How old are your return lines? Any leaks or drips from the engine? Any liquid in the valley pan? How does your glowplug harness look?

Glowplug harness is decent, oil leaks everywhere and i mean everywhere injection pump has a small occasional leak on the inbound side of the pump, tighten the fitting and the leak subsidies for a week or so untill the line gets lose but it wasnt leaking at the time of the video, return lines are approx 2 months old replace at the same time as injectors.

Where did you get the injectors? Did you delete the mechanical fuel pump and block it off or are you running it inline? Stock fuel filter?

i would pull the line fitting your talking about and clean it up and seal up the threads good so it stops leaking. then once you get the glow plugs, install them and start it up. see what she sounds like then and refresh this thread. its super hard to chase stuff fuel related when truck isnt running.

I have a block off plate for the mechanical lift pump but havent installed it yet so the mechanical lift pump is still there just no lines running to it, (got dark on me is why i didnt install) And i still have the stock fuel filter head with a brand new filter less than 20 miles on it as well as the facet pump, the injectirs were ebay injectors, (150.00) for 8 rebuilt. Cheaped put just to see if the truck actually ran because when i bought it, it was non running. I am planning on r&d injectors, billet return rails and injector pump and i believe that purchase will be coming sooner than expected...

Most of the ebay injectors are trash, many members have opened them up to find rust and dirt inside, even though they appear clean and rebuilt on the exterior. You won't hurt anything leaving the pump in for now but I wouldn't leave it in forever.
Like you said it looks like that purchase is closer than you may have initially expected but if you think about it, you will have a bullet proof brand new injection system that will last you another 150k and up. If this was a psd you would be looking at twice the cost or more.
