I don't think so. I don't remember ever hitting the governor. if I did somehow it would have been by accident.
My question was sort of stupid anyhow. Cuz the pics sure make it look like they are constantly hitting, vs they hit one time due to an over-rev.

here are some pictures. this looks to be the worst piston. its hard to get an accurate measurement due to a raised lip on the piston.

that is a .012 shim.

Hmm.
So appears to be a little much to have been valve float.

I would agree. I don't really beat on the motor. I do use it but in my opinion to be in a reasonable order.

do you have the front cover off yet? I don't suppose there is any chance in hell it was installed one tooth off by mistake?

Not that I can tell. All the marks line up. What pistons should be at the top to double check?

I'm sure you have it right, it's pretty obvious when it isn't. ( as in the attached pic ) Going off memory but, #1 should be top dead when the marks are lined up from what I remember. I guess the reality is, something is wrong with that cam, and or the cam/pushrod/head gasket combo.

I double checked, the marks align with #1 at TDC.

what would be best way to solve this? time isn't really on my side now. if I get the shaved pistons I can hone it and do most of the work myself.

or should I go after the valves and heads? I would have to send those out to be rebuilt and not sure how soon that could be done.

Once I pull my toasted engine out I will have to check mine. Typ4 cam was only in for a month before it bit the bullet. And I am ******* my trucks. Towing Gary's truck at the last rally I was running 3000+ rpm for a while at 1050-1150 egt in second gear climbing the hills of pa

Can you put a dial gauge on the block deck and check the different between the top of the piston and the bottom of the valve dent? That's the best way I can think of to know the depth of those contact marks.

That much contact, you'd think you would hear it wouldn't you? Could it be that it's fine at idle and not an issue until the oil pressure builds to pump the lifters up? What do I know.

I don't have all the 100% correct measuring tools, but the biggest dent is from the exhaust valve. I measured that and it looks to be down .008 from the top of the piston.
