Thinking of pulling out the IDI and putting a 460 or smaller in its place. For the weight, cost of parts, lack of power, and whats needed to bring it up to "standard" performance, To me, its not worth it. Not to mention reliability issues people have. Hell, I can't even find a core support for it that has A/C. Been told I can't use a "non a/c" radiator either or it will get to hot.
Unless I'm missing something here, it's coming out. Had a 460 and even though I couldn't drive it with a bad trans, it was a monster and I miss it.
What do you all think?

Depends on how you use your truck and how you like or need to use it.
I wouldn't enjoy my IDI if it was in my T-bird.I wouldn't enjoy my 429 if it was in my truck.Where they are and how I use them,I wouldn't trade either for the world. If you want "real" performance you can build a 460 far beyond the dreams and hopes of any IDI without much effort. So depends on how much power you want and how you use it.Nothing's cheap about driving either one of them so.

It's more of an all purpose. Maybe a daily, then on a day off load up a trailer, or do some light off roading. Take momma out on the town. Show up the ricer punks old iron is better than new fiberglass. Little bit of everything.

Well there ya go.You can build an IDI all you want. You'll never build anything that will show up a modern 4 cyl tuner car (ricer) with an IDI in a truck. They will smoke you without effort. They're simply too light and fast revving.Your only hope of doing that is with the big block.
There will never be any such thing as a 7k lb idi truck being a 10 second truck.lol.
IDI = commercial work engine......but it's never going to be fast enough to take a light, quick car,no matter what you do to it.You can make it a better tower but your not going to build it to be quick enough for that.
BB = commercial work engine to full drag racing machine, depending on how you build it......even then, don't under estimate the modern 4 cyl cars. These suckers can be built to where you'll never have a chance in a heavy truck.Amazing what they can do with the little suckers......in fact.Have you considered just leaving the truck alone and then getting a toy? Try a little 4 cyl car.I think you'll be surprised.

I guess if you want to spend a lot in gas money. I get what you mean on the power thing. I have thought, what if my f350 was a gasser? yes it could have more power, but im not interested in 6 mpg.

if you want quick hot rod/work truck and MPGs aren't an issue then I would go for it.

Maybe not smoke the ricer punks but when they start revving at the light and I fill up their interior with soot.... No seriously, I know a 5k # truck is no match for them. But I would like to "show off" if you will sometimes. I am looking more for a truck that can be fancy and fun one night and work the next.

I rev at fast little cars because I enjoy wantching them take off fast. idi not Gonna keep up with most of them anyway lol on the highway it's fun to line up with other idi's and early power strokes though cause they always look at my truck and thjnking it's got its got nothing going on under the hood and usually a draw I've passed some before I'm not gonna go like 100+mph thoughi back off long before that lol I even pulled against a 6.0 once.. he was on like 44 inch tires though and obviously no gears or engine mods LOL I don't have many modifications(90ccpump,stage1jectors,4inch exhaust, large intake) but It's enough to play with. I've rode in a mild build 460 it was good on power idi probably couldn't keep up, I drove a stock 460 with auto wasn't my thing, faster? Probably but it just didn't sound or feel the same to me something about that black smoke, clattering and whistling  straight 6 motor with a 5 speed almost got 20 mpg if I recal, indestructible but little beast they are though!!

I play with people in my PSD all the time. Most get a quick surprise. Lol
But I sure wouldn't mind a 4x4 1/2 ton to play with.

I have a 10 second IDI truck!!!!
we are talking 1/8 mile, right? LOL
I will keep my suggestions at bay, because it will likely turn into a trash talking event.
