is the gear reduction starter that is the "better" replacement than this:

75 pound direct drive starter.

Getting ready to order one, and for $20 difference, I'd rather get the "better" one for a bit more starting oomph......

The first one is a bit easier to install, correct? Since it's a bit smaller and lighter than the direst drive unit? The one we have, is starting to show it didn't appreciate being leaned on when we had the bad glow plugs, and I want to get one one the way, before I am replacing it somewhere besides in the garage.....

The gear reduction starter is what you want. Had a new direct drive starter and it wouldn't turn over my new engine very well. Pulled it out and got a gear reduction starter in and spins about 2x faster.....or so it seems.
The gear red. was also easier to install imo.

Snicklas,

Those are BOTH gear reduction starters. The "open nose" is a bit easier to get in and out (at least in MY application) but they are both "torque amplified" starters, replicating two different manufacturers' (I think Mitsubishi and Denso) design. The DIRECT DRIVE starter looks like this:

the first picture is the 2.5kw nippondenso gear reduction starter, the second picture is the original style Mitsubishi gear reduction starter. Both are good starters, but some of the mitsu style will be 2.5 vs 3.6kw. Never had good luck with the 2.5kw mitsu.

I have never had the intermittent grind with the nippondenso gr starter even on trucks that ground all the time with the mitsu or the delco direct drive.

Never had a problem with ours from NAPA. If you want I can go over with ya and get ya 10% off at Napa. They don't carry it in the store but they can get it in toot sweet. Upside there is if you do have a problem they are like a mile from your house.

Good info, didn't know they were both GR starters. One is clearly better than the other imo tho

I just installed a nippondenso gear reduction starter from O'reilly last weekend because my flywheel is chewed up a little and the old style starter was grinding it up a bit. No more grinding with the nippondenso, however, it seems like the engine doesn't turn over as fast now. btw that top bolt is way easier to get to with these nippondenso starters.

Typ4 and several other members here talk about the 4.0kw gear reduction starter. Very similar to your first link. It's like $150 bucks.

4kw only has 2 mounting holes. Russ had talked about going back to the 3-hole since he had a bad problem with top bolt.
