I used the search found "T19 Overheating?" thread but it didn't help me very much.

If it shifts fine when cold but wants to stay in gear, or out of gear, when warm (normal operating temp)... is that a bad TOB?

I'm having trouble understanding what's failed.

Thanks y'all.

Sounds like something with the clutch. Put it in neutral and let out on the clutch when it's warm, engine running. Push in on the clutch and wait a few seconds, and then try to put it in reverse. If it grinds wait a few more seconds and try again. If it still grinds, you have something wrong with the clutch. Could be a hydraulic problem, could be a clutch diaphragm problem.

Thank you Franklin2. I agree that somethin's wrong with the clutch.
I'd like to understand WHAT's wrong with the clutch..
It gives me problems when it's been running at "normal" temp for any extended period.
I changed the oil ... fresh 80w-90 and it's full.
Clutch doesn't "feel" different so I don't think it's the pressure plate or hydraulic system.
I don't hear any excessive noise when idling with clutch out ...
I don't get it...what failed?

If your hydraulic line is routed too close to the exhaust and overheating the fluid for the clutch, I could see that causing a problem. But I would thing the pedal would feel different if something like that happened. You might want to look and see how far away the line is from any exhaust pipes.

I hadn't even considered that ... I'll see if anything has bounced out of place but I don't think there's enough slack in it to get that close to exhaust.

sounds like mine. It was the TOB. They arent greased. I would drive through a puddle and it would shift much smoother. Got to the point of completely falling apart and then I broke my clutch pedals push rod.

Thank you. I've got a clutch kit on the way ... let the fun begin!

Im in the middle of swapping out mine as well. Which kit did you buy? I dont know much, this is my first time dropping a transmission, but my thread "help with my clutch" has some good info and pics.

Youll probably finish your job before I do. Im working very slow, it seems to be raining every time I have a free moment.

PartsGeek.com 1985 Ford F250 Clutch Kit - 07-065 LUK - $107.33
I used LUK when I put the ZF in my SC too ... like it and PartsGeek ships fast
I saw that thread, I appreciate the info.
This is my first 4x4 clutch job. If there's an upside, at least I don't have to jack the truck up! I'm not looking forward to the job, but I sure do like to use this truck, so I hope to get it squared away next weekend.
Good luck with yours.

Firewall seems solid..had that problem on another truck. Been thinking though... How could TOB work Sometimes?
When I have the problem, I can still disengage the clutch with the pedal.

The more I think about it, the more confused I get.
What part of a clutch would / could only fail after it's warmed up?
I'm not saying "hot" because the truck wasn't loaded the first time the problem occurred and I haven't loaded it since.
Everything seems fine until I drive 20+ miles at highway speed (between 60 and 65). I don't have a trans. oil temp gauge so I don't know for sure ... but the trans isn't hot to the touch after highway speeds (unloaded) so surely it's not overheated.?.
I sure don't want to stab a new clutch just to find my T-19 needs work.

Does it grind once you've driven it for a bit or does it just not want to shift in and out of gears smoothly?

.
It shifts fine until the truck warms up ... highway speed more than 20 or so miles.
Last night I ran it pretty hard, tried to make it fail, results:

After driving it like I stole it for 8 to 10 miles, last 2 running 65~70 mph, it didn't want to down shift..locked me out until rolling about 25 then let me into 2nd.

Parked it overnight, shifted perfectly for the 4 mile drive to the fuel station and back this morning.
