I have used Hylomar in the past, on deck surfaces that were not in perfect shape, when replacing head gaskets. And never had a problem. Question is, how about Permatex Copper Spray? That's all I have at the moment and I'm doing a rush, unexpected head gasket job on an idi. The mating surfaces are not in perfect shape, but not bad either. Ant thoughts on using the stuff?

I swear by Hylomar.. Rolls Royce got it right.
I have used the copper spray with good results.

That said... A second teardown due to gasket failure won't save any time.
I have never had an idi head off so I'm not much help.
Free bump.

I've used the copper RTV on a bunch of sealing surfaces on my IDI's (oil pan, oil cooler gaskets, and what not), but never tried the spray. Never used anything on the head gaskets except hylomar. Problem is, I've never found hylomar anywhere locally. I've always had to order it online.

If you're in a rush, and there is absolutely no time to get hylomar, I'd give it a try. If the deck and head surfaces aren't super clean and Permatex says its to be used on head gaskets....... then something is better than nothing.

I've used copper coat spray with good results on metal head gaskets and on timing cover gaskets on old Toyota 22R/7MGTE engines. I'd think a thin coat would be fine. I was taught to allow it to dry completely before installation...YMMV

Thanks for the prompt replies fellas. I will give it a light spray, let it dry (as it says on the can) and then place the gasket and then the head. The block surfaces are looking ok but not perfect, and I will feel good about having a coat of spray on the gasket. I will post back with the results once the truck is up and running.

Um... Don't use anything. Clean all the surfaces really good, then install the FelPro or Victor Reinz gaskets. The material in the gasket will adhere to the block and head pretty well.
I've had perfect luck doing it this way, including using an old, worn head that had been sitting for years; wire-wheeled it and stuck it on. No leaks.

Used it on my old 83. In the 3 years after I had no issues. Coated both sides of gaskets and block and head surface. Let dry and stuck it together.

X2, Felpro tells you to not use anything with their head gaskets.

Is one gasket superior over the other, FelPro vs. Reinz??

i like to buy reinz gaskets when available, they were the oe gaskets for the idi as well. imo reinz has a better gasket.

I always prefer FelPro. I have used Victor Reinz and have nothing bad to say about them. I think they're both good gaskets.
