Afternoon everyone,

Can I please get some feedback on who you would trust with having your heads rebuilt? Any recommendations are highly valued. There is a good chance I am currently having some valve issues and the heads will be getting pulled for the studs anyway. Might as well hit two birds with one stone.

Any where in the country is fine with me. I can handle paying the freight shipping cost as long as I know i'm getting quality work. Preferably someone who is quite familiar with our engines or has done 6.9 heads in the past and knows the expectations. I've done plenty as asking around where I live and most people wouldn't trust a single machine shop around these parts. I could drive into Houston but I know most of the machine shops round there specialize in gas engines, mostly..

Thanks!

Be very careful who you trust your IDI heads to. Most places I've tried in the past have treated these like SBC heads. You want a shop that knows diesel heads, and has experience with IDI heads. Not easy to find to be honest. I had to take my 6.9 heads to Haas Machine in Louisville, KY to get them done right. They did a great job. I drove 5 hours round trip to get them there.

I don't know any shops in Texas, but there are a lot of TX members here. Surely someone will know a good shop closer to you.

I used hillcrest camshaft in Little Rock, AR. I had good crack free heads and did not need to replace any valves.

I measured all tolerances when they were done and I am in spec on minimum thickness, valve recession,( intake and exhaust) and valve spring pressures.

Light truck diesels are the smallest engines they work on. They had some locomotive cylinder heads in the shop when I was there.....

A little over 600 bucks for the machine work.

I have learned while searching the forum that finding a machine shop that would be able to correctly rebuild our heads to spec would be a task. I'm grateful for the info, it's something I've stressed about since getting the truck and knowing that there would be a day where it was time to pull the heads. I will be sure to look into Haas and hopefully be able to work out a deal on the shipping issue. As of now they are my only option... Hopefully someone will know of a closer place.

How much does each head weigh, roughly? Minimum of a 100 lbs. I'd guess?..

What's the cost for 300lbs. in freight these days? Lol

Thanks Heath!

I'm having my local machine shop here in Canyon, TX do mine. D&L Machine...father/son operation and he said they've done several IDI heads in the past and he knew about the tight tolerance for decking the heads as they work on 6.0's that have similar tolerances as far as how much you can deck them, he knew about the pre cups and all that too. Said it'd be around $3-500 if it didn't need much and $7-800 if all the valves had to be replaced but I don't think they will. There's also a couple of really good ones in Amarillo 15 miles north of here...but D&L handles everything my brother throws at him. My brother runs a performance diesel shop here and they do all our diesel engine machine work...but I would think that there would be something closer than this...if you have a facebook I'd almost try posting something on Diesels of Texas and see if there is anything down there.

Isn't it pathetic that Little Rock, AR is closer than Canyon, TX for me? Lol

Little Rock is about 9 hours 20 minutes.

Canyon is 10 hours 15 minutes...

The cons of living in the deep south! :frustrate

Thanks!

you watch your filthy mouth the next time you regard me in such standard. :backoff:flipa

you may get away with calling a man Sir, or even Gent,
but calling him both brings out the true personality LOL

Everyone quickly save that page to your computer/phone/iPad. I did years ago.

Actually, I save every digital copy of any reference material. Never know when you might need it.

I'm gonna print this out and frame it. Probably hang it in the shop. LOL
