What does the alternator have to do with the tachometer?

Yes, the sensor for the tachometer is on the injection pump gear tower completely separate of the alternator.

Our idi engine gets the tach signal from the top of the injection pump gear housing towards the drivers side of this housing. Find the large metal plug with 2 black wires going to it. That is the tach sensor. If an alternator fits it will work on our idi engine. Just be sure it has the external or the internal voltage regulator like what is now on your engine.

I am not sure where you are from but you can swing by almost any parts store in the states.

Rockauto.com is a good on line supplier.

Regarding the tachometer: it's just the other way around. IF your engine is NOT equipped with a rpm signal, it's common to use a signal from the alternator.

Regarding parts: I have ordered once from summit racing and received parts within 7 days from Ohio to Germany. Shipping 100€ though, because of heavy parts.

There are a lot of old US Ford trucks in Norway, my guess would be there are parts available also.

Regarding alternator: check for the correct one! There are different ones possible with different mounts.
