I've never been a fan of automatic transmissions in trucks that have to work much. I'm wondering how big of an ordeal it is to swap to a manual in a 2000 4x4 crew cab (SRW). Would obviously include changing the transmission, Tcase, and possibly Drive shaft, but what about installing the clutch? How much "Stuff" has to be removed in order to gain access to the area? I presume the break pedal and associated mounting hardware would all need to be swapped out also. Just trying to get an idea of the scope of such a project.

do you need any parts or do you have them all. I was told there are quite a few differences between the auto and manual truck. im sure it can be done.

It's practically the same as with the idi.
You can even keep the auto pcm in it.

I don't have anything at this point. I picked the truck up in November, and I'm working on it getting it road worthy again. Trying to decide what my long term plan will be for the truck. It has 170K on the clock, and I generally drive them till the wheels fall off. So at some point I'm either going to need to have the existing trans rebuilt, or swap it for a ZF6. The body is pretty rough at this point, so I'm actually up in the air about a lot of things at this point. I may end up driving it for a few years and use it to learn how to work on powerstrokes while I look for something else that better suits my long term needs. Not sure yet. For now, I just know that my IDI is getting long in the tooth, and I need a back up in the driveway. Work on one while I drive the other, and visa versa. After researching this topic a little more, I'm leaning more and more towards this being a shorter term investment than my standard 10 year plan.

if its a truck that you don't really know if you want to keep or is worth putting money into then I would leave the auto in it and if it does fail rebuild it or do the swap then.

just my .02 cents.

The issue your struggling with is that you really have to do all the good upgrades to a E4OD/4R100 to get anything worthy of the pulling the 7.3 PSD is up for. I will give you this piece of input: my E4OD was pretty soft when I got it, and I put a chip in it and it did change the shift points and I believe it has helped. Don't get me wrong, I am still planning on a transmission rebuild in the future, but I will say I have hauled lots of stuff since I updated the chip, including a three place snowmobile with gear/machines/fuel/etc on a 500 mile round trip last week with no issues.
