Lately my IDI luck has ran out. Can't keep a head gasket glued in. 3 engines within 6 months and it wasn't for lack of maintenance. . I feel I am asking too much out of the ol girls so I decided to go to the dark side.... Powerstroke swap time.

The recipient: 94 F350 4x4 auto, factory turbo, dually.

The donor: 94 F250 2wd 5 speed Stroke.

The goal: reliable farm truck.

The deal on the parts truck was the seller gets the transmission back. Not a problem, don't need it anyhow. The donor is a bit rough. 250k miles or so and it hasn't ran since about 04-05 range.

Most of the wiring doesn't look too bad, pretty well unmolested that was BUT for some reason they did this:

I guess they couldn't figure out how to disconnect the plug so the cut the harness between the power distribution box and the engine harness.

I'm suppose to pick a harness tomorrow morning and hopefully start finding what ever other problems this 12 year neglected engine may have. I defiantly want to get it running in the donor truck before I swap everything over.

You guys know anything specific I should check over (besides fluids) before I start trying to revitalize this pig?

make sure you spin her over first BY HAND,
and then do a coolant pressure check.
if all good, fire her up

Change the oil. Powerstrokes need good oil for the hydraulically fired injectors to work correctly, Ford technician told me more than half the hard starts he saw for PSDs were "oil service issues".

Good luck with the swap

I'm going to spin it and make sure I got some pressure before I waste 12 quarts of new oil.

My truck at work has a C7 and every oil change I add 2 quarts of ATF. I get better cold starts and I've been told my truck pulls the hills better by other people who have drove it. It defiantly feels like it helps the truck out and I don't think it'll hurt the longevity.

WOO HOO!!!

Laid the new harness in, bled the air out of the fuel bowl, and lots of spinning later it started!! 12 years and it sounds like it never missed a day of work! Except either the AC pump or the vacuum pump is crazy noisy.

Very little smoke and blow by.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it needs injector o-rings.... It was 9 quarts low on oil and when I looked in the fuel bowl it was blacker than black so somehow the oil is returning back to the fuel tanks. I have seen this 1 time at work on a C7. Took me a while to figure out where all the oil was going until I changed the fuel filter one day.

Yes, oil in the fuel bowl is most likely injector orings.
The Alliants are good.

do you mean add ATF and run it , then drain the oil for the service? I've used ATF in oil before but only when I'm about to do an oil change for soot flushing. C7/3126 is a really good engine but they can be very costly to fix.

Nope, add it on every oil change. I've torn a few engines apart I have done that too and the internals stay very clean. It's a 22 quart system so 2 quarts isn't a whole lot on top of 5 gallons

Got the fuel bowl, turbo, injectors and glow plugs out.

Found the culprit for the oil in the fuel but all 8 have hard o rings.

The glow plugs all tested good and are Beru's but I think I'll put new ones in anyway while the engine is on the stand

I can believe how little wear this engine has for 248k. Still has cross hatches in the cylinders and the 1 main bearing I checked looks real nice.

Can you guys think of anything else I should go over before I put it in the truck?

So far I'm replacing the o rings on the:
Oil cooler
Injectors
Turbo Pedestal
Oil pan seal
Dip stick tube
Rear main seal

And I think I'm going to do a fuel bowl delete and use remote mount filter heads so I won't have to worry about it giving me any troubles. Might go for an electric pump too when the mechanical gives out
