    Another cold start thread.......

Yeah, once it's been fired up and warmed for about 5 minutes, it fires up and idles just fine. It's just the initial start after sitting over night or longer. It's an old U-haul van and I have the maintenance records for it. It received new injectors and glow plugs in late '05. Dunno how...

    Another cold start thread.......

On the '93 IDI you guys helped me with, the return lines and o-rings were definitely bad, but they were leaking fuel, not air. This '89 doesn't appear to be leaking fuel from those areas (no fuel dripping/puddling like the '93 did) but I haven't pulled the dog house yet to get a better look...

    Another cold start thread.......

Ok, after searching, I've found that most threads about cold starts are during deep winter conditions and glow plug issues. My situation is different. Just purchased an '89 F350 16' U-haul box van with the 7.3 IDI and C6. I purchased the truck at 8pm in 10 degree winter weather last week...

    '89 F350 diesel/auto trans shifting issue

Definitely not an OD transmission - the gear selector only shows P R D 2 1. So, I guess it's a C-6. Interesting, I didn't know they put those behind the IDI Diesels. About the fluid added: I bought 5 quarts of Dex/Merc..... I've never heard of adding fluid to transmissions in pints much...

    '89 F350 diesel/auto trans shifting issue

Forgive me for my newbie-ness and general Ford ignorance. I'm a GM/Dodge guy usually, but just acquired an old U-Haul box van and need some help. It's an '89 F350 with the 7.3 IDI (177K miles) and an auto - but I don't know what trans specifically it is. Here's the symptoms: Previous...

Mechanical fuel pump - 7.3 IDI

All said and done, the fresh fuel, filter, and pump made a huge improvement in performance. Grey/white smoke is gone, healthy stream of black on acceleration and decent power was obtained. When I was replacing the tach sensor, I looked at the IP and how it was mounted. I noticed an awl...

Mechanical fuel pump - 7.3 IDI

Ok, took it to get some fresh fuel today and drove it about 30 miles. Seems to be an improvement again having added the fresh fuel. (And I'm kinda jealous of the nice ride quality compared to my Cummins 3500.....) One thing I noticed while driving up an on-ramp to the highway..... under an...

Mechanical fuel pump - 7.3 IDI

Ok, pump's in, but I can't get fuel to the injectors. I have fuel up to and in the fuel filter...... but all it'll do is crank continuously, no fire. I'm pretty certain that the pump lever went in correctly, I could actually feel when the arm went up over the cam lobe, and when it was under...

Mechanical fuel pump - 7.3 IDI

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. The re-design, cam lobe thing makes perfect sense. Since I'm just fixing and flipping this truck, I'll stick to the cheap fix for now and get a solid NAPA pump and get it running again. If I were keeping it, I'd consider the electric pump...

Mechanical fuel pump - 7.3 IDI

Well, you guys are kinda confirming my thoughts......... In looking at the design of the old pump lever, it seemed that the cam would press into it rather than just move it up and down. The pumps NAPA had looked more like the bottom stroke of the cam lobe would press straight down on the...

Mechanical fuel pump - 7.3 IDI

Did you notice a difference in the shape of the levers? Was the old one different from the NAPA one? Or did your old one match the NAPA one?

Mechanical fuel pump - 7.3 IDI

Talk about frustration........... In trying to shake down my high RPM fuel delivery issues, I decided to go ahead and replace the mechanical fuel pump. It appeared to be the factory original as it still had the International grey paint all over it..... Well I removed the damn thing and...

Looking for rear leaf spring interchange confirmation...

Got lucky and found a guy selling rear springs already off the truck for $40! This should make it much easier to do the heating of the retainers and rebuild the leafs rather than swap the entire setup. Thanks for all the good info!

'93 IDI newbie: Some questions after searching/surfing

Progress report: Ok, I've replaced the fuel filter, replaced the very leaky injector return o-rings and hoses, confirmed that the air filter was nice and clean. I also switched to the second fuel tank - which happened to be full! I took it for a 20 minute drive around the neighborhood...

Looking for rear leaf spring interchange confirmation...

Crap - that's right, totally forgot about the retainer clamps...... that makes things difficult at the salvage yard.... Generally, our Colorado based trucks aren't that rusty and the parts come apart fairly decently. But this '93 from Iowa I'm working on..... gonna be interesting...
