    1989 7.3 IDI - hard starting & hitting a brick wall

Goat - thank you. Glad you were able to finally find a few that fit! I have something like this, although a different brand. I was skeptical until I used it. Zero issues and the fastest/mess-free bleed I've ever done. It also comes with a separate fitting to suck the fluid out of the old MC...

    1989 7.3 IDI - hard starting & hitting a brick wall

Yeah, it's a great feeling, to say the least. Now that I'm not spending all my spare time on the starting issue, I put a new master cylinder in my rig, along with a new brake booster...replacing the failing units. I used one of those air compressor-type bleeders for the first time, worked like a...

    1989 7.3 IDI - hard starting & hitting a brick wall

Ok, the tests are complete. Years ago, I cut the 2 yellow wires out of the melted harness at the passenger fender well. One of those butt connections was bad, causing excess resistance. After careful consideration, I ended up pulling out the factory power run for the glow plug controller and...

Yeah, I'm sure you can appreciate how great it was to finally figure this out!!! So to confirm, you are NOT using the old fusible links? In other words, I can go from the starter solenoid with 6g to a 250 amp fuse, then continue to the hot terminal with 6g?

ihc1470 - Ok, so I just got done making up a quick 6g jumper. I hooked it up from the starter solenoid and directly to the hot bus on the glow plug controller (disconnecting the factory power). Note, that I did not have a fuse on this temp. set up but I was ready to pull the power if any issues...

James - good question...I got it online, can't recall the seller off the top of my head, but it is of good quality and all connections check out.

Ok, good point. I'll recheck today. Running a jumper is a great idea too. I'll report back.

    1989 7.3 IDI - hard starting & hitting a brick wall

I agree, it's concerning that things with the glow plug system seem to test out as working, with the exception of the higher-than-expected voltage when the glow plugs are under load. Even though the plugs and controller are basically new and are motorcraft, it is possible that something was bad...

Yeah, I agree, my issue is a bit of a head-scratcher for sure. I can empathize with all the work that you put into your rig to get it to reliably start. I bet that was very satisfying once you got it all dialed in!

James - thank you. Hopefully, I can get it worked out before it gets really cold out;) Happy Thanksgiving to all!

    1989 7.3 IDI - hard starting & hitting a brick wall

Agree with you, it would seem logical that my glow plug system has an issue. All glow plugs glow red hot when hooked up to 12 volts and they, along with he GPC are basically new.

Here are my results. Thoughts? Both the glow plugs and controller have less than 500 miles on them. Both are motorcraft. Glow plugs ohm out at around .2 and .3 and burn bright red with 12 volts applied. Glow plug harness is new as well. Put your postive of your meter test lead on the single...

Apologies for the long explanation. No problem, you didn't miss anything. I've never tested each individually, only the input power and output at the lugs on the controller. I just went out and did some testing. While the glow plugs are under load and all of them are being powered, they all test...

    1989 7.3 IDI - hard starting & hitting a brick wall

I have a 1989 F250 7.3 IDI that I’ve owned for about 10 years and it has never started as it should. I am mechanically inclined and do all the work to my truck myself. This said, I’m at the point where I’m pulling my hair out trying to solve the hard starts. Here is what I know and what I've...
