It's the stock metal line, 1/4" I believe. I'm figuring one of the stupid brass compression sleeves turned sideways in the oil line or more than likely something went bad inside the turbo. The tailpipe is blacker and sootier than it normally is.- Moosebob

So it seems my engine is fine. I moved the gauge from the turbo to an oil plug infront of the rear oil cooler header. Started it up and got 47psi. At hot idle I get about 11psi from the block but at the turbo it's about 6psi. Is that enough oil for the turbo?- Moosebob

Didn't see any bearings coming out with the oil, it was smooth and black. I cleaned out the drain pan so whatever I find came from the engine this round. I don't think my inspection camera is going to fit in there with the tube so close to the pan. Any way to check if the pickup screen is...- Moosebob

Pressure regulator wasn't stuck open :( It looked closed and I couldn't catch an edge with a pick. Getting 7psi on a cold start from the turbo, and the turbo feels fine. At this point I'm guessing I lost some bearings.- Moosebob

The bypass routes oil around the filter in the event the filter can't handle the volume coming through it. The pressure relief valve is what dumps the oil back to the pan rather than through the engine. The pressure relief will be the first thing I check when I get out to the garage. 1989 7.3 IDI has me stumped
I vote tach sensor also, that needle moves to fast for it to be an accurate reading. My tach won't register anything below 1500rpm but jumps right up there when you step on it. Can you see bare wires at the sensor? Mine are exposed more than half an inch (sounds so dirty!) but I haven't felt...- Moosebob

OK help!
Research showed the most likely culprit was the metering valve sticking inside the IP. Took the top of it off and it was stiff compared with my old IP. Worked it around a while then sucked out some of the diesel and filled it with ATF. Let it sit a while and worked it some more. Felt better...- Moosebob

Installing boost gauge on 6.9?
I know my 7.3 has a 1/8 plug somewhere on the intake system, that's where i'd put it too.- Moosebob

OK help!
Update again.... Truck is all back together and running. Gets about 45psi on a cold start at 45 degrees. Must have been that one plug behind the front oil cooler header. Thanks so much to the ******* at the Knights Auto Machine Shop who didn't put the 75 cent plug back in. Now the next...- Moosebob

OK help!
It is turning ok now, not as freely as I would like. However, I was trying to turn it while I was cranking to get oil around it and when I get oil pressure built up the turbo stops turning. When the pressure goes away it will turn again. No idea what's up with that. Also no idea how to check the...- Moosebob

Update... Ok so I put a plug in that one hole behind the oil cooler header. Pulled off 2 rod caps and the bearings were a little scratched, at least on the cap side. I didn't check the rod side or the mains. Put it all back together with the cork oil pan gasket for testing purposes because that...- Moosebob

If you look at where the gasket covers, I believe that hole would be open to oil going through it. I grabbed a plug lying around at work today from a powerstroke and will see if that happens to fit there.
