    IDI tachs don't run from the alternator. They run from a two wire sensor on the timing cover, right next to the engine oil filler.

    Nah it's supposed to have another wire. Both IDIs I've had with 1g had 2 wires. and based on the diagram I posted just above, vans got the same wire colors. My current 89 that someone switched to 3g. The now unused orange and white-black stripe wires are taped off.

    It does for me with a 1/4" drive 5/16 or 11mm deep socket. You could shim it with washers or a bushing between the clamp's T and the nut, if you have to.

    1G type of alternator? If so, check the two wire plastic connector to see if it has come out/loose. It has a plastic spring on the plastic fitting that can break. If that's unplugged, the alternator won't turn on. A replacement: https://www.ebay.com/itm/181705691905

    I got a Four Seasons one via Walmart recently and it seems to work ok. Do you have the transmission connected to the radiator cooler like it should be? Even with an extra cooler, it seriously needs it to be connected or it'll cook the transmission.
