Muir Woods National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service on Mount Tamalpais near the Pacific coast, in southwestern Marin County, California. It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is 12 miles (19 km) north of San Francisco. It protects 554 acres (224 ha),[4] of which 240 acres (97 ha) are old growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests,[5] one of a few such stands remaining in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Before the Europeans arrived in the 18th century, the area around the strait and the bay was inhabited by the Ohlone to the south and Coast Miwok people to the north. Descendants of both tribes remain in the area.

The Coast Miwok spoke their own Coast Miwok language in the Utian linguistic group. They lived by hunting and gathering, and lived in small bands without centralized political authority. In the springtime they would head to the coasts to hunt salmon and other seafood, including seaweed.[2]

The pre-contact Ohlone practiced Kuksu. They believed that spiritual doctors could heal and prevent illness, and they had a "probable belief in bear shamans".

President Theodore Roosevelt used the powers of the Antiquities Act on January 9, 1908, to create Muir Woods National Monument. William Kent, who donated the land for the monument, requested that it be named for noted conservationist John Muir.

The Endor scenes in Return of the Jedi were filmed in multiple Northern California locations: the Redwood grove near the Skywalker Ranch in Marin County; Muir Woods National Monument; and privately owned Redwood groves along the Smith River in Del Norte County, which are now part of Redwood National and State Parks.

Though, individually I personally admire the giant sequoia a bit more than the redwood.Together, these make up the most spectacular forest, you'll ever walk in! If your looking to be humbled, walk among the giants.Do you think trees can talk? Perhaps they speak in a different way than you and I do.Take a walk in here. All you need is an open mind and a willingness to listen,to hear the spirit of these trees whisper to you.Don't try and listen with your ears. That's not how you'll hear them. You'll come out refreshed and clear minded. What advice do you suppose these trees have for you?
