Now here is a post your not likely to see very often, but as I write this, I am currently southbound, doing about a hundred MPH, on Amtrak train 91, Car 9110, Room 2, and we just crossed the Susquehanna river. This Silver Star is being pulled by an AEM-7 at the moment, but we'll pick up a Genesis series diesel at Union Station in DC. Just wanted to demostrate my omnipotent moderating abilities extend even to rail and catenary. Bruahahhahahahhahhaah.... :rotflmao

Florida by train is longgggg.

Why not the friendly skies?

I think it's because Mel's cookoo for trains...I recall him describing himself as a ferroequinologist (I hope I spelled that right :sorry: ) a few years back.

Not that I can blame him; I have much the same regard for airplanes :D my childhood hero was Al Haynes (now, let's see if anyone can figure out who he is)..

Surely you jest. Heck, I haven't had to take my shoes off once today. Besides, Jet fuel doesn't smell the same as this.

He spoke at the college I went to. He had an aviation scholarship there, quite a guy he still knows the names of all who died and where they were sitting.
I believe it!! I heard him speak in 1994 (I was 13 at the time)...I tried to record it on audio tape, but the recording didn't come out very well. One of the defining moments of my life...I knew the story before hearing him speak (I've been a complete aviation nut since I could read, and knew everything that was available to the general public about that incident), but still learned more than I could describe about that incident, handling aviaton emergencies in general, and working as a team.

If anyone ever has the chance to watch the movie "A Thousand Heroes", I strongly recommend it.

With his engineers hat proudly worn and evident proof that Mel prolly hasn't even stuck his head back inside the rail car for very long.......
Like the proverbial dog going for a car ride.LOL

Have a good trip Mel and don't pester the engineer too much.:D

Have a safe trip Mel!
If you've taken out the engineer and commandeered the train through S.C. blow the horns on your way by; otherwise do what Geo said! LOL

I spoke with Mr Haynes after one of his speeches. Now thats a man and like he said just part of the heros on board/ Nobody has ever been able to "fly" a DC10 in a simulator like he did. He even had an instructor flying with him as a passenger that couldn't beleive what was going on. The SOP book didn't have a senerio for the loss of complelte hydraulics. They even called the factory design engineers but they wouldn't say it could not fly like that....

I rode the Empire Builder from Mpls to PDX, to get my '93 IDI. What a great experiance. Thru the mountains and high plains. I'd definately do it again. It was great actually getting to know some of the other travelers. Rather than sitting next to someone for 2 hrs and just say'n Hi, excuse me, ect.
