IP questions on turning it up

Well I got my new IP from Gomer's in the truck two days ago. went pretty well but i had to take off the injector lines, as the turbo intake manifold and hat were in the way. I had turned the pump up before I put it on as I figured it would be easier.

This brings me to my question, as I was turning up the fuel I turned the set screw clockwise correct? It turned quite a lot easier than my last pump. I got about 3/4 of a revolution of the allen wrench and then it stopped. I didn't want to go any farther and break something but I am getting very little black smoke. I have it timed at 8 deg the last pump was at 4 could that have made the difference in the smoke I have yet to pull with it and my egt's seem to be in the same place as they were with the other pump.

any ideas?

Usually they are quite hard to turn. I have no idea though on how you can tell if your all the way in.

Sounds like you're not achieving full fuel delivery, hows the power? (Yours is a turbo engine right?) If you have turned the screw till it stops, then perhaps the rebuilder slipped some kind of shim under the roller spring to keep it from opening up fully. Otherwise the spring itself may be mis-shapen. Do you have the external rear screw (which may be interferring). I guess the obvious question would be, is your throttle pedal travel causing full pump shaft rotation?

Since you have the newer IP, you may need to max out your external fuel screw. I had to do the same thing to my IP, since it was a DPS job, I could only turn my screw a hair, and then had to max the external screw. That really let the fuel start coming. These guys can probably show yo a digram of the external fuel screw, but it is on the back of the IP with a 3/8's or so size nut, with an allen wrench head. You can back it out all the way, till there is just enough threads to lock the nut down. Scotty

I had heard of the external screw but need to figure out which one it is. I thought there were two screws on the back? The power seems close to the old pump but not quite, torque seems up though just not as powerful high end. I need to check for full throttle travel and then look for the external fuel screw, Scotty can you explain a bit more of the location, or does anyone of a pic.

1 is the metering valve guide stud
2 Is the external fuel rate adjustment screw that is on 92.5 and up IPs. Loosen the lock nut with a 3/8th (May also be 7/16) wrench. While holding the locknut with the wrench, turn the torx screw with a 1/8th allen wrench. Counter clockwise increases fuel, clockwise decreases. (opposite of the internal screw). Then retighten the locknut to 8.5-11.3 INCH POUNDS.
3 is the hold down lock for the nose cone

Thanks for the pic that helps, I thought there was more than one screw back there, and didn't want to mess with the wrong one. I will let you know what comes of the experiment.

well I adjusted the external screw and it didn't help much if any and I backed it out a looooong ways. I just don't blow the coal like I used to and it seems as though the turbo is not pumping as much boost. I know the more fuel the more boost so it seems as though I am not getting as mush fuel as before. Can you turn the internal screw too much, or is it infinate? Like I said it turned so easily for the first 3/4 revolution and it got pretty tough so I didn't wanna break anything, any ideas?

I'll second what Mel said. They are very hard to turn. Hmmm, hard to say if yours is already maxed or not. For mine, I always bottom it out, and then back off 1 flat. It may be worth popping the triangle off again to see if you really did have it maxed, or if it was just getting harder to turn.

Also, if your timing is way off, that may be some of the cause for lack of coal and boost. Something to think about anyway.

In addition, since it’s a new pump, you may try having someone hold the go pedal to the floor while you inspect the throttle cable. That way you can make sure a floored pedal is truly giving you wide open throttle. Maybe that cable is getting hung up some how and you’re not moving that lever on the pump all the way.
