I believe my Garrett GTP38R 99.5 stock turbo needs a rebuild 169K miles. It sounds like the bearings are shot, wants to RRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRR after a quick ramp up and back off. Still get 15-18 PSI boost on flooring it.
Thought it was the TC going bad, it got so noisy.

Question; Where is the best place for parts? Does anyone know what I would need?
$1800 is too much to spend for a new one from Beans.

ebay.i see rebuild kits on there all the time fairly cheap.only thing that worries me is how do you make sure its balanced when its done?maybe try a salvage yard for a used turbo?i picked up a used 99 stocker for 150.00 out of a salvage yard

Went shopping on ebay for 2 hours, here is what I came up with, 1st 2 links are rebuild kits, the rest are reman turbo's.
Haven't taken off the one on the engine yet, pretty sure I need the 5 bolt mount, GTP38R . I would call before I would order. If they only charge $25 core, I think I will get a rebuild Kit and keep the core for a spare.

This one may not be for a 99.5 even tho it says it is.

The 38R is a ball bearing turbo and the only to have them rebuilt is to buy the drop in cartridge. 1,000 to 1,200 for the kit.

I really don't know if it's an R type. Guess I'll have to tear it down to really know what I have. Don't see a tag on it for any model numbers.

99-03 turbos run a bushing like the 94-97s

I sure hope so. That's what the repair kit's say. Truck is buried in snow now after last nites storm. Damn.

Going to order the kit today any how, it's cheap enough, maybe I'll get it by the time the snow melts. :D

Thanks Guy's

Just looked at one of the rebuild kits, say's the GT38 has the wastgate externally mounted, that's what mine has. :hail

the auction i posted the guy says he has the kit for both with or without external wastegate ;Sweet nice thing is those ones are easy to pull.took me total of half hour to replace one and im sure i can do it quicker now that ive done one.

remove intake spider clamp, band clamp on the exhaust housing and 2 13mm bolts that come right out through the top unlike the obs where you gotta pull the pedistal with the turbo and 4 exhaust bolts,2 of wich are nightmares along with the 2 rear pedistal bolts.make sure you replace all 4 pedistal orings while youre in there ;Sweet any questions let me know and ill help if i can
