two steps forward, one step back. the 80-91 pedal brackets led to the problems of firewall cracking. the 92-97 bracket did away with the problem but developed a new one instead. the older brackets has a large bearing surface for the shaft to ride against, the new style has a bearing surface that is the width of a drilled piece of sheetmetal.:eek:cookoo no ********. see the pics. the updated bracket did have a chickenshit solution, they added a nut that increased the surface to 1/8" for the plastic bushing to ride on.
lookie at the pics.

I have the same issue with my 92, the crossshaft for the 2 pedals is all worn to **** and everything moves when you push the clutch..It's worse now that I put the 6.9 in with the 4 spd pressure plate - more pedal effort....I either have to buy new bushings or check the 2 spare pedal assemblies I have to see if they are ok to use.

don't bother.
just get a new assy for $120 USD. You'll save yourself a ton of stress.

I highly doubt I can get it for that price around here - the dealers are crooked as hell. The RF wheel bearing just failed on my fathers 04 Ranger 4x4, Ford wanted $321 - Mazda wanted $521!!!!....He got one from the aftermartket for $139....I will run that part number for a price today to compare....I have 2 spare assemblys and I know they are good and tight as both trucks were running when I got them....Mine is the first one I've seen with the pedal slop this bad.

Thanks Towcat. I searched but didn't see your thread. Found the heim Joint mod though. Bought bushings today. Master cyl rod and bracket with pin will be here Tuesday. Just going to try and rebuild the thing first and if that fails I'm buying the bracket. I'm Only 40 bucks in it so far.

So am I to assume that the 87-91 pedals and the 92-97 pedals can be freely swapped between those years? I thought you couldn't, just getting some clarification.

How hard is it to change out that pedal assembly as in , how much time spent contorting oneself under the dash, because I don't bend very well any more.
My 92 has started a bit where both pedals start wobling a tad when I go for the clutch and brake at the same time. I think it's fair to assume that the goodies towcat pictured are the culprits .

It's kind of a paint for sure to put them in and out. Towcat, thanks...so the original post was just stating the purpose in design differences between the Gen 8 and 9 trucks?

that is the exact culprit for wobbling OBS pedals.
it's not a fun job to do but not the end of the world either. it took me a little longer due to communications equipment and lighting relays crammed under the dash.

the older style brackets had 1.5" to 2" of bearing surface for the clutch to ride on. that was fine. the material they used to make the bracket sucked. when the redesign happened with the OBS bracket, they went to a "stiffer material but killed the bearing surface. I didn't say anything about compatibility between the two generations, just a comparison between prro design and bad material choices
