i got chip truck stripped down, redoing the stake body enclosure.the plywood did good.it lasted 6 years with just paint.can't beat that for around $200 bucks.so im redoing it again the same way for another 5 or 6 years.anywho before i start re-plywooding and put the stake body back on,i thought id run up the hill with it to snap a pic first.it's not very often stripped down to a flatbed.

attachment.php

so this dump bed i had pretty much all redone.the front and the c-channels down the center.there are some holes coming through the sides and the rear sections now.though now im too busy with the truck,i'll have to wait until winter to have them replaced.i should be able to figure out a gentle enough way to use log trucks auto crane to lift the whole works up and off so long as i take my time.
anyway,i'm about to start cutting some fresh wood and then prime it.

Beautiful. I grew up working in my father's tree business, he used to drive me to school in his 77 1 ton, we had plywood sides with "Dan's Tree Service" and our ground line for our house phone hand painted on them (since my father didn't have a cell phone yet)

Our truck wasn't a fancy dump, we had to either unload everything by hand which later evolved to us using a big cyprus log cut perfectly to the width of the bed to leave in the front of the load and attach a cable to a big oak and man did I think that was fancy

I just built some stake sides for mine.
I used deck stain. Figured I'll give it a try and see how it last.

this brings a whole new meaning to econo box!

im gaining boys,im gaining!.........im not as young as i once was,let me tell ya.dammit! lol. ah well, happens to the best of us.id of rather spent the day at Acadia but there's no rest for the wicked.anywho,i should have her wrapped up and feeding her some chips by tomorrow afternoon.

attachment.php

the front 4' section you see there,is on hinges.i prop it up and i have small carpets i hang under it,i'll put 'em on tomorrow.they keep chip dust in the bed pretty good and at least the majority off the cab.when i need to load it with wood, the whole 4' roof folds right back all the way, leaving the bed pretty much all open.well, you'll see as i put it all back together.getting closer.

Just my 2 cents... We always coat the wooden beds of our trucks and trailers with used motor oil, just a bucket and an old mop does fine, but it sure protects and seals the floor mighty well, never had a bed rot after treating it with the 15-40!

I bet it helps protect the steel underneath too. Most trucks start to rust at the rear frame anyway.

i got it.......finally.:D
i actually had much more to do,than simply rip off the old plywood, prime, paint and screw more on.i added a couple brackets down low by the rear swinging gates to help keep the sides more sturdy.this meant, removing a few bolts that held down the planks, ream the holes larger and install them and larger bolts.cut out all the 2x4.rip all the plywood.wait for primer to dry, paint, wait for paint to dry.bolt down the 2x4s.rip out all the 2x2.screw everything down, then roll out a second coat.drill and insert new eye bolts for the top swinging roof oh of course hinges for the roof.new eybolts to hold the swinging gates open for dumping and the rear gate hinges were in horrible shape.i had to burn off the loose and wobbly bolts, move the hinges up so the gate can swing more freely, and install all new hardware bolts and nuts on those.there's a lot too it to make it all sturdy and insure everything gets a coat of primer and two coats of paint.
anywho she's ready for another 5 years all easy.save for the flatbed body sides and rear sections which will get replaced this winter.so have a looky.

so here it is with a half roof which is on a hinges.the small snap cord is used to keep the roof from flipping up in a strong wind so it can't just flip up,snap and crash down on my cab roof.the larger rope is used to lower the roof backwards, down onto the 2' solid section of roof and the culvert/tool box.and so you can easily lift it back up.
attachment.php

here you can see,all i need to do is open the rear gates, insert a prop rod and she's ready to take a load of chips.with the carpet sides this helps aid in greatly reducing dust on the cab of the truck,so that a wash is good for a solid week in most cases.
attachment.php

now, sometimes i need to haul wood.so you can't get up there and stack it if you had a roof in your way,so this is when i flip it forward completely, making tossing in and stacking wood just as easy as if it were an open bed.since it's all black, you can't see it but there is a front 2' stationary section.
attachment.php

often people will say; that's a nice truck! you don't see too many around anymore in nice shape like that.and they will then ask; what's that tube for up there?
well have a look.it holds my prop rod for the chip roof, pole saw, pole pruner and peavy.it also acts as more support for the flip up hinged roof to rest on.

attachment.php

it's just a 10" plastic culvert.capped on one end.this end shown i use a "test plug" to gain access.
looks like:
You must be registered for see images attach

so this setup as been working great since '09 so i didn't change much.i just fixed up a few old hinges and made a few more brackets to help hold things tighter.
she's one handy son of a gun.she'll dump anything you put in the bed, light brush, compacted wood chips or a full load of freshly cut,red oak at the same speed, approx 30 seconds to tilt up more than 45 degrees.electric over hydraulic.
she's 8' wide and 9' long (exterior) interior is near a solid 8x8.couple inches longer but an inch or two shy sideways.
the stake sides are iirc 3.5" high.so she can haul a very nice load.i added 1 main leaf and have iirc 4 overloads.the overload pack sits on the aux hangers even empty so she rides like a truck but with the TTB front end (started life as an f250 remember) she sits level, empty or full so she doesn't eat tires.
chip truck weighs in at a 8,200 lb fat girl with 1 tank of fuel and her underbody boxes full of chainsaws and climbing gear.

chip truck is back and ready to eat more chips.;Sweet
