well, that didnt cut it.
i have the front cover off the IP gear housing.
bore scope does not fit
took the lift pump off(its obsolete anyways)
spend about an hour trying to get it weasled up to the cam/ip gear.

frack it, im pulling the front gear cover off, with the IP gear cover loose.

ill pull the IP and gear cover off later to reseal
i gave it a shot... time to tear down.
it runs great, but im not satisfied until i get to the bottom of this.

Sorry to hear about all this. I know where you are coming from, wanting to get it right. The manual shows drawing a line on the IP gear, and I can see that working. Now how do you know where the timing mark is on the cam gear? I have heard (Urban myth possibly) of using a dental pick to find it. Might be worth a try. This guy on FTE used this method to verify the timing marks. I would try it on something other than your engine first. I wouldn't want plumbers putty ending up in my oil pan or between my gears. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1113735-aligning-the-pump-gear.html
Edit: I just had another thought. I have seen a mirror used to reflect sunlight to illuminate areas a flashlight wouldn't. Maybe you can see in there that way. I just hate the thought of you taking everything apart.

it is what it is.
the main objective is to make sure my letters match.
its only a harmonic dampner, a water pump, radiator, etc.
and i also wanna inspect the coolant system.
the longevity of the engine is in mind, so really no other way around it.
dental pics and other ideas may work, but i would feel alot better if i saw it all in plain view.
gonna set me back about 150 bucks, but worth it IMO.
besides, i love wrenchin on this thing.
also, im going to get rid of that ********* lip on the radiator support,
that thing ****** me off big time!..LOL

Dental pick will work fine if you are feeling lazy. Very early in my IDI career I replaced the ip by removing the top gear and used the dental pick to get it back in the correct location. I intentionally installed it one tooth off in both directions to check myself. Its pretty obvious when its in the right spot.

I used Gary's pictures and the 17 tooth rule and plain sight to set these up. Hope they help! A bit easier with the engine out but you'll manage.

We had a guy show up at a timing clinic once. He was way off, and we were surprised it ran. He popped the gear housing off, and moved the gear back and forth, with me checking the timing, to see if he got it close. It took like forever, but we did eventually get to the point where we felt we were within 1 tooth. I timed a different truck here at the shop that I was able to get in spec, but the pump was leaning way over towards the drivers side. He had some unrelated engine problems later, and told me it was 2 teeth off.

The wild part is the pump at full pass is clocked at like 11:30.
When I first got there it was at 12-12:30.
But anyhoooo Brian GET THAT CHIIT LINED UP' as well as it ran down the road before I wanna see the misters in action on a timed eng.!!!
