Why did they make it into another oddball pattern on the tranny side?

if you find someone that can answer this,
please ask them the following questions

which came first, the chicken or the egg?

why is our government failing?

why is the sky blue?

who built the Egyptian pyramids?

did the Aztecs leave the planet or just die?

^^^^ What's up with the face on Mars?

Why didn't the world end on 12/21/2012?

And what REALLY happens when you tear the tag off your mattress?

It's a ZF transmission behind an International engine. Did Ford have anything to do with either bolt pattern? Maybe it was something arranged between ZF and IH.....

Having worked in production/factories for years, and around the engineers also, I am willing to bet it was a political/departmental wrestling match over something. You would not believe the money that is wasted over inflated ego's and "this is my playpen" type junk.

The 4 speed bells and ZF front case half are the same casting as 460 pieces, just drilled differently. I cannot speak for the autos, never had them side by side to compare.

I have heard also that it's a oddball international pattern. I sure would like a Ford engineer to explain why when they made their adapter for this engine, they didn't use the 460 pattern on the other side of it?

If you need a sae pattern I think you can get one from a school bus, uhaul, or a dump truck that used this engine.
I have heard that the starter size prohibited use of the 460 bolt pattern. Not sure it's true.

My guess is no. I have (and several other have as well) a 460 ZF5 bolted to the 6.9 in my '86 crew cab. Starter was never an issue.

nothing like bringing up an 8 yr old thread with false information.

our starters are mounted on the adapter plate.

Did y’all figure out the pattern yet?
Summary:

6.9 and 7.3 idi engine block has a international bell pattern cast into it.

The Ford adapter bolts to the international bell and converts it to a "Ford diesel" bell pattern.

Whoever made the school buses, dump trucks, u hauls, etc. and wanted to use a SAE pattern medium truck transmission, used a adapter that adapted the international bell pattern to the SAE pattern.
