Actually, the iron in cast iron is exactly what your body needs. That's why the old cast iron skillet is actually a prime cooking utensil!

Well, not exactly. Body actually uses the oxidized forms. But the stomach acid converts it from iron (0) to iron (2+) or (3+). Most supplements are iron salts for that reason however you do find metallic iron in some fortified foods like cereal. If you crush it up in water and toss a magnetic stir bar in it for a while, it will extract it. Used to teach a lab based on that. There you go your science lesson for the day.
