So my hypermax on my new to me 86 6.9 was leaking a good bit of oil. I bought the rebuild kit from hypermax, they told me it would be a pulse turbo.

Well I'm into the rebuild now, the whole thing is apart, then I got to lookin at the kit, and there is a few O-rings in there, three to be exact.... yet there are no rubber O-rings inside this turbo? Is this part of that carbon --> dynamic seal thing people keep mentioning. I was hoping to have the truck up by monday but since every shop will be closed and every mechanic I know is out of town, I turn to y'all for help!!

Thank you!

does your backplate have the ring seal , if not its the carbon and will NOT seal up. you need a backplate and related parts to fit that turbo. I may have that stuff, but I will be gone this weekend, but im going to towcats. you got any way to bring the turbo to his place, I could bring parts to possibly fix? if you dont answer by morning ill throw the stuff in and you can call me.

You guys kick ass! There's a black ring in the back plate that I was assuming was the seal. I got to lookin online and it appears the bearings they sent me were dynamic bearings anyways. I might end up calling you in the morning anyways!

Thank you guys again. Also, I'll try and get some pictures up real quick after work, so in about 3.5 hours

I went through all the pictures i had been shown on the other forum and it looks like i have a conventional turbo not a pulse like hypermax said i did. The bearings appear the same but that explains why they sent me Orings

I was also thinking you do not have a pulse turbo. I know of three places wgere you might have o-rings. The intake to hat. The hat to the turbo. And the turbo compresser side of the turbo inlet. Thats the aluminum part of the inlet where the cold intake air gets compressed. Its the seal between that aluminum piece and the cast iron center section. I'm not sure there are any other o-ring locations. Surely Russ will know way more than me. I feel he will tell you the turbo must also be balance because it spins upwards of 120,000 rpm and thats equal to 2000 rpm per second... Absolutely no room for the tinest bit of balance issues. Yes, This site rocks on and on...

Thanks for the great pics. Has there been any fan rub in the inlet side against the aluminum housing. I feel I see something dark on the housing in one of the pics. Hope not because if there is your going to need more that parts replacement. It will ned to be machined back to oem specs. Russ can tell you what it needs. Hes that good with these turbos.

I think they schwacked my pictures lol or they just aren't showing up to me

Any dark gunk is oil, the housing is all perfectly fine.

Russ will be coming down and passing through an area about 45 minutes from me, but since it looks like I gotta send this pulse kit back to get a conventional kit, I might forgo the trip to see Russ and just wait for my mechanic to come back next week. He said he'd give me a call at about Williams and I'll wait to see what he says then.

I am VERY thankful for all the help from everyone, this is just one of those things that is real frustrating since I'm so impatient to drive my truck again

Please don't rush thru a turbo rebuild. When things go bad in them they go bad in a huge way at the rpm they spin. Russ is very reasonable with what he does to rpair turbos. About the only turbo he wont touch is the Banks wastegated sindwinder. Its a Mistubishi and they are not forthcoming with part numbers. So if you want a part you have to know the part number. But if Mistubishi wont tell you the part number how the hell are you going to have a part number. Its a crazy way of doing business. Banks is completely no help with thrbo rebuild parts but they gladly will sell you a new turbo and the last time I bought one it was $1100.00. No other parts like manifolds or oil feed lines or filters.. Just the turbo in a box. Just 4 bolts and it was installed on my manifold. Connect the drain and the oil supply and down pipe and varoom.. I was off and running happy as a puppy with two peters.

Haha yeah I am glad this truck had a hypermax on it. The retired mechanic down the street used to maintain a fleet of IDI tow trucks so he knows 6.9's and 7.3's inside out, upside down and even into the next dimension! He says he's rebuilt a darn lot of turbo's too.

I gotta start first by getting the proper darn kit!
