Hello all, I'm from Washington state and plan on purchasing a "new to me" diesel here within a year or so. I've owned trucks since I was a teen but never a diesel. I will be towing a 34' travel trailer and wish to spend no more than 13k on the truck it self. I'm kinda stuck though between the F250 with the 7.3 powerstroke and the Chevrolet 2500 with the 6.6 Duramax. I know Chevy has the Allison transmission which is one of the best around or so I'm told but I know nothing about what ford has to offer transmission wise. Any guidance that will point me towards the best bang for my buck will be much appreciated!

fords use 4 different types of transmissions behind the powerstroke.
the early PSD's use either a E4OD, or a ZF5
99+ uses the 4R100 or the ZF6
the 4R100 has served me well. but id rather have a manual trans.

the question I have for you, is do you want to drive a Navistar, or an Isuzu?

I cant help you in that department.
I am a diehard F series kinda guy.

all depends how you treat your vehicle.
but id rather have as much of an American vehicle as I can.

While the Allison is great, if it hasn't been maintained properly, it's just as bad as a Dodge trans. I've seen it many times.
The Chevy will ride better. Lb7's have injector problems. They didn't come from the factory with a lift pump. So they seem to eat injectors because of that.
With ford you have to worry about the pmr engine.

powder metal rods.
a weaker rod than forged or cast.
used late 2001-2003 for the 7.3's

if you get a 7.3 powerstroke, stick to the pre 01 engines.
altho the PMR's do just fine on a stock tuned engine.
ive heard there good to 450 hp.

Powdered metal connecting rods.
You'd be fine running stockish. But if you wanna hop it up for more power, gotta be careful.
That's only the SD trucks though. Obs powerstroke rods are forged.

I would get a common rail system witch is 6.6 in chevy and 6.4 powerstroke, and 24v cummins. I have been trying to find a 24v cummins with and allison. They are rare in small trucks.

6.6 had head gasket failure over heating problems and injector failed with o rings fail and dumb diesel into the crank case.

For me, I would stay away from the 6.4. Lol
Just from my own research on them.
The duramax has injector cups somewhat like the 7.3 and 6.0 psd, but only coolant surrounds it.

Also second generation duramax had injector harness problems. Much like the 7.3 powerstroke.

Personally I haven't seen many head gasket problems. Have heard of over heating with the lbz (?) But it can be addressed.

For a newer truck, a 6.7 powerstroke would be my choice. Preferably a 15+ to get the better turbo.

I don't really have any problems with the 6.7 cummins. I just don't favor dodges that much. They're decent trucks though.

All have quirks and fixes. Really it's just finding a truck you like.

Jasper is right find a truck you like and it feels good to drive. You will be happy with it even when things fail just do a good checking over everything well. Like now I'm getting a 95 chevy 1500 with a 6.5l turbo diesel that guy paying me for fixing another truck of his.

It's 2wd 205000 miles on it getting for about 600 for labor so think it's a good pos for that.

Has some oil around the turbo boot but I'll fix that drive it till it stops. Then is something happens I can take everything and put it in my 62 c10 chevy.
