my 390 FE based 410 is complete.
one thing i overlooked prior to building is the dipstick.
this engine is intended for marine use.
and the dipstick tube hole in the cast has been filled in,prior to me
(the placement by the oil filter adapter)

where else can i get an oil reading from? i.e. installing a dipstick somewhere.
short of pulling the pan and installing something.

if the pan has to be pulled, im thinking of installing 2 nipples, and connecting them with a clear line to instantly check oil level and condition.

A site glass type tube would be cool.
Dunno how well I'd trust the durability of it though.

(puts hair around it)

jasper, no glass, my boats are usually on the boarder of flight.
lots of vibration, but a clear tube would work well.
it wont see pressure, just as long as its rated for oil.

i guess i can check the condition of the oil via a gauge which i will have.

Yes, I didn't mean literal glass. Lol
Just "sight glass." That last ones I put together were not glass.
For a boat, I think a oil level gauge would be slick.

boats get an oil change every 3 months, so its not likely i need one,

the biggest thing is condensation, in these types of boats, they see lots of moisture.

I had a 410, probably the best running engine I have ever had. Threw an overhaul at it in 98 and ran the **** out of it until about 2010. had it in 3 different trucks, and probably 150k, never showed any sign of getting tired.

my 390 is like that. me and my dad built the engine in 1985.
about 5 years ago i went to change the exhaust manifolds,
broke 9-10 bolts in the heads.
so off came the heads, got them a valve job, new cam, new intake, and new carb.
put headers on it and shes a beast still..

I built a day tank out of pipe with a pfa tube up the side of it. Pair of npt compression elbows with "clear" tube between them. Worked great.
