I drive the truck in my Sig but my son has a 1998 2500 Ext Cab 5.9 24v 375k miles...Stock turbo went out, so he found another that looked good and had no wiggle in the shaft and slapped it on. Drove down the street without getting on it and in just a few blocks the same thing happened. After taking a closer look he said the oil line looks dry and thinks both turbo's failed due to no oil flow.

After Googleing the problem he has learned that the oil pumps on these very rarely go out so he is not quite sure where to start trouble shooting the problem. We are both new to diesels but he wrenches and has turbo'd some import gassers.

Any suggestion appreciated.

He checked the feed line and it is all clear. He also pulled the oil filter housing cover to see if there was anything obvious and the passages look clear but maybe some hidden problem??

That's about all that could be left, some internal passageway blocked.
If you can if without the line hooked up, does oil come out?

Thanks for the replies Jasper. He started it briefly with the line off and no oil came out. Would lead me to believe that the oil pump is bad but from what I understand the pumps very rarely go out on these.

Does the normal oil pressure sender location register?
Rarely go out doesn't mean much, especially with how many of these trucks are on the road. Lol

Does not seem to have any oil pressure anywhere. Brief start up with oil filter off and nothing. Don't know what else it could be besides the pump.

Pics of Bad Oil Pump

My son pulled the oil pump tonight and it is definitely bad...looks like the shaft broke inside the case. Bits of metal lodged in there from the pump or from elsewhere. It's good to know what the problem is but now we wonder what kind of damage the motor might have.

Dang. Just have to check all the bearing clearances.
Or throw a pump in and check oil pressure.
