CAT 3116 Anyone ever changed the injector pump?

I am in th eprocess of changing the inj. pump on this ****. It's a 1993 GMC topkick P.O.S. I need some help. Has anyone ever worked on one of these????

changing the pump? I thought those pumps were bulletproof like a Bosch A, or P-pump.

the 3116 does not have an injector pump.just a governor/fuel pump.the injectors themselves are opened/closed by the camshaft.

That must be why you have to adjust the fuel rate from under the valve cover, in the rack.

3116 has a HEUI system.

no they dont.unless they were changed after 1998.

the injectors are fed fuel from a fuel pump.they are opened by a seperate lobe on the camshaft.pop the valve cover off of one and you will see 3 pushrods and rocker arms for each cylinder.1 is intake,1 is exhaust,1 is the injector.you will also see the rack the meters the amount of fuel that is injected.

94 is correct.... I didnt even notice the model year on the truck.

all modern day 3116s and 3126s are HUEI injected though, I think that change was in 97 or 98.

the 3116 is a GM only engine. CAT got around that by making the 3126 model. (same thing, just a different model number) so they could offer it everywhere else.

And yeah... they were pretty gutless.... They could pull hard, but didnt have the balls to run hard too.

the change had to of been after 98 as my buddy has a 98 7500 with the 3116 with the mechanicle injection

The 3116 is not a GM only motor. It was originaly used in the Cat 320 excavator. It was designed by Mitsubishi Caterpillar liked it and they done their usual, bought Mitsu's Industrial Line. I can round you up some pdf's for the service manual for a 3116 in an excavaor if this will help. Good Luck
