Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Ah good point. And yeah, since they were bored, they should have no taper to them at all. I'll just leave the rings on. I did notice they forgot to install a freeze plug where the block heater was. Will call them tomorrow to see if I can borrow the install tool and get one more freeze plug...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Got the block unloaded. Looks really nice: New freeze plugs: I'm not expert, but it looks like they used the correct tool to install them? And one of the .040 over pistons: Still a little bummed they took it to .040 over instead of .020 as was the original plan, but I guess if no...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Finally got the block back! They unfortunately weren't able to get .020 pistons, only .040 ones, so that's what it got bored too. He assured me I won't have any issues going that much over. He did have me bring the cam shaft in so they could do a test fit before I left. It was a nice tight...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Last time I spoke to the shop, they were still waiting on the pistons to come in. Going to check with them again early next week to see what the status is. He did show me the hot tanked blocked when I picked up the heads to return as cores. Looked really nice. Should have taken a picture or two.

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Good catch. Yep, its there. Got the new heads in today. They look nice I think: Precups have minor cracking, but nowhere near extending out to the fire ring: Did I mention they also come with a 1 year warranty? All in all I think a very fair deal and they got from Texas to Virginia...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Picked up the cores. Other head: Crack is clear on the first head, but I don't really see it on the 2nd one, but I guess they did when magnafluxing it?

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

I'm swinging by the local machine shop tomorrow to pick up one set of the cracked heads. I'll see if he can point out where they are cracked and I'll take some pictures. He also wants me to bring him the main caps and bolts so he can torque those to spec before boring the block. The rebuild...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Called up CHI and they do have a set of rebuild heads in stock. They will accept a pair of the cracked ones as cores. $1,150 total, including shipping the cores back.

I believe they magnafluxed the castings themselves, but let me verify with them. Good point! EDIT: Yeah, they magnafluxed the castings and that's when they found out.

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Machine shop called me back this morning and said that all 4 heads were cracked and no good to use. Any suggestions on where to pick up a good set of heads with cores? Found this place...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Good point about bypassing one of the tanks. That said, I would like to take the truck back to stock as much as possible. Accurate Diesel gave me credit for 15 of the 16 injector cores I returned so that mostly covers the cost of FSV. I also decided to go with brand new injectors vs. rebuild...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

After noodling it over and speaking to the shop, I'm going to have them order the pistons and rings for me that are .020 over. Here's the full quite for parts and labor: So labor total of just over 6 hours or $660 and the cost of the .020 pistons is better than what I found online. This way...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

I took a closer look at both my oem STD pistons and the .020 Mahle ones and I don't know that I would want to be drilling into any of them. I then looked at the cost of a set of rings, cheapest I could find was $187 (ENGINETECH from rockauto), and knowing that I would need at least one more...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Great idea about just getting a gauge with the proper range. The Amazon reseller is giving me a hard time about getting a replacement. They want to see a video of me pumping and the gauge not moving. Already sent off all the injectors this morning are cores, so that's not going to happen for...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

I'll see if the machine shop would be willing to trade working on my '92 block in exchange for the '89 block. Doesn't hurt to ask and I can throw them both on the truck to take down there next week if he's will to at least look at it before deciding. While I haven't put the micrometer on the...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Tore the original '89 block the rest of the way down. Here's the #8 piston that caused the damage to the cylinder wall: Not sure what would have caused the failing but afterwards, the wrist pin walked out and started scraping the bore: I have not found the clip yet that supposedly went on...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

As I was cleaning up and re-arranging engine parts to prepare to start tearing down the original '89 engine, I moved the heads and the pre-cups fell out of them. I was a bit surprised as I figured they would have been in there pretty snug. Not a big deal since I won't be using these pre-ups...

I'll definitely do that when I receive the replacement. Its the Vevor brand I went with. Have some of their other stuff and it seems decent. I also looked at the Mophorn brand, but they appear to all be the same and in fact, looking at some of the comments on the Amazon reviews, the Mophorn...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

I got the injection tester today, but the pressure gauge doesn't register anything: Started an advanced replacement. Should have it early next week. Other than the gauge not working, it seems decent enough and I was able to test all 16 injectors I have on hand and they pretty much all suck...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

Very good point about tearing down the original engine and pull the pistons to measure to see that they fall within .020 spec. I already know the one with a messed up wrist pin is no good. I never got any further with that block than to pull the heads. Good to know these engines perform well...

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

I got my Fowler 5" micrometer and think I was able to figure out how to zero out the bore gauge @ 4.1100". After making sure the micrometer read 0 with the 4" calibration stick it came with, I set it as follows: I then put the bore gauge in #7 first and got this reading near the top: And...

Agreed. I got this far, so might as well. Just waiting on the 5" micrometer so that I can take some measurements and start going to town with the hone. ;)

Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

I did hone #5 a good bit and this is where I'm at right now: You can feel those groves, but a fingernail doesn't catch in them anymore. I'm waiting on a 4-5" micrometer to get here so that I can properly calibrate my bore gauge so that I can measure the bore on #5. I guess I'll just keep...

@IDIBRONCO Very good advice on not reusing the injectors from the '92 engine. I took apart the odd bank injectors and cleaned them in my ultrasonic cleaner: Take a closer look at these guys: No surprise #5 looks the worst. Compare the shape of those to this one off one of my original...
